Ported Blower on Stock Tune?
Hey guys, 35k mile car, M6 totally stock except a 2.9 upper pulley. I had a guy replace the snout bearings replaced and solid isolator installed using the eaton stuff from SCOL.
My blower is still rattling after all this with pretty much the same noise, so I'm leaning towards sending it out to Jokerz performance for a rebuild but I see there is a decent discount to have the rebuild and budget port job done at the same time. Does anyone have any experience with having a ported blower, on a stock car, while running the stock tune? If the car goes into a lean scenario, will a CEL appear and/or will the tune self correct (ie timing) to ensure no damage is done? I do road course the car quite a bit, so it will see WOT. |

I would advise against running a ported blower on a stock tune, especially because you are already up against the limits of the stock tune with the 2.9” pulley. Don’t risk your engine over saving a few hundred bucks.

I raised my boost about 3 psi on the stock tune without issues. No pulleys or tuning. Car is a completely different animal now. Boost at 1500 rpms, breaks traction at 60 mph. From my experience, porting will help airflow yes, but the MAF sensor still measures the total amount of air and that’s what the ECM reads.

I would highly recommend checking the AFR if nothing else, some cars actually run richer with a ported blower, ported heads, cam and exhaust due to being more efficient requiring less fuel and then some will run leaner which is what you do not want. I would not take the risk to save less than a $1000.00 bucks. Detonation (lean) cost dearly.

This topic has been debated on many times, short answer is to be safe you should tune it...
Now I will say that I had a Roto-fab CAI, 2.83 upper, ported LS3 TB, SC inlet and Housing, SLP headers . That was all on a stock tune and it ran very well.. was I pushing it , probably but it hauled ass !!!

One of the early mods in my build was a pulley (2.55"). When I got it tuned, I was informed I had to go with bigger injectors. I was running out of injectors at higher rpms. We had to set the rev limiter at 6k. At that time, I only had a RotoFab and Kooks Long Tubes to go along with the pulley.
Staying with a stock would have been costly, given the way I drive my car. So either tune it or drive it slow. My vote: Tune it and go have fun. |
