That's your answer right there. Take a 200-mile trip at 65 mph and your mpg should be deep in the 30s, especially if your car still has AFM, ie you didn't have it tuned out or aren't using a Range device. City driving and stop/go in heavy traffic are absolute mpg killers with this car.

Wow, that's slightly worse than me in a V8 and I race it in AutoX (which burns surprisingly little fuel).
Even when I get on the gas big time, it's hard for me to get less than 18. But I always shift to the highest possible gear that the engine is happy at when I'm not on the gas. There's no reason with the V8 to go sequentially through the gears and I imagine even the V6 is the same, just to a lesser extent, where I can skip 2-3 gears easy, you can skip at least 1. But turning high RPMs is a mileage killer. Lots of aggressive pulls are as well, but again, with manual I can usually mitigate that pretty easily by driving in the high gears at the other times. Stop and go traffic is pretty bad for mileage too.

OP, IF your goal is more efficient gas mileage, learn how to coast when approaching a stop. The Camaro is heavy, which means that it takes more energy (gas) to get it moving. Your goal is to keep it moving (at any speed) as often as possible so you don't waste energy speeding up and then stopping right afterward.
Look as far ahead as you can and anticipate when you'll need to stop (red lights, traffic back up); When you see one of those moments, get off the throttle completely and coast. Make your goal to keep the car rolling rather than come to complete stop, so break early and lightly if need be when approaching a "stopping point." That red light might turn green before you get there if you arrive more slowly. |

I've gotten 28.8 mpg with my 1SS M6 on the highway, but a good average for me has been around 21.5 city/highway combined. Unless I have my foot to floor that is, then it's around 17 mpg. Either way with the weight of the car and 455/455 I'll take the 21.5 mpg.

I have only had my SS for a short while, but my average is 18-ish.
Got this car to have fun and meet the want for a convertible. Never really thought of mpg when getting it. If it had a 7.x liter and 700+ hp engine would have still gotten it…:-P Also, only keep it in sport mode so far. Have to test track and touring. When I am practical take my truck or my winter beater (Chevy Trax AWD). |

Reminds me of a Ram I owned. I purposefully bought the 318 motor because the 360 showed lower fuel efficiency numbers and I didn't need the power for towing. Turned out my MPG was significantly WORSE than I would have gotten with the 360 because the 318 simply didn't have the power to maintain 70MPH on the highway with any sort of slope to the road. Every time I climbed even the slightest uphill grade, the truck downshifted to maintain speed... |

My long-term average over 17k miles is 18.8 mpg, using Fuelly. best I've gotten was 30.3 on a tank where it was only hgihway, cruise controlled to speed limit. Road trips routinely reach 25mpg, city dirivng is closer to 15.

Mine varies a lot, 5 mpg track to 30 mpg highway w/M6 V8. I agree w/others that short trips and stop/go are the major contributors to poor fuel economy. Overall the 6 is pretty good for what it is, most see high 20s overall where the 8 is low 20s.

Since we are talking about gas mileage I have a question about the Range piggyback device. I have a M6 SS and I understand that the manuals don't have AFM. Is it possible to enable it for better mpg on highway? Manual corvettes had it and I think the engine has the hardware installed.

The only AFM hardware present on the car is in the engine (which you mentioned) - the backpressure controllers through the exhaust are not present on the M6 cars and are a necessary part of the process. |

Extreme humid weather drains the life out of my gas tank too I notice. Hot humid rainy days in particular.

I'm taking a 1200 mile roundtrip this weekend, down into southern Oregon. My average mpg is ~22 so far. Hoping it jumps into the 30s after the trip, mostly freeways, plus some winding 2-lanes thru a national forest. Looking forward to it.
