Question Getting ready to do my own oil change on 1LE. is it really 10 quarts? K&N oil filter?

All,

Getting read to do my own MObile 1 oil change on my 2018 (dealership did my first initial breakin 2 oil changes) so im ready now to do my next one on my own but auto zone said my SS 1LE says 10 quarts is this right?

Also, was looking into the listed K&N performance oil filters that are listed to fit a standard SS 6 gen.

what are your thoughts? Anyone with experience in trying these?

So much good info and knowledge on here so I come here to ask... thanks

Yes the LT1 takes 10 quarts of oil.

No experience with K&N oil filters, just make sure it is close equivalent to the PF64( 22 PSI bypass).

The owners manual is correct: 10 quarts. Dexos1 5W-30 or 0W-40, unless you're tracking it, then Dexos2 per the Performance Supplement.

The ACDelco PF64 is actually a good filter, it's readily available, and super inexpensive. The K&N's are OK but overpriced for their performance.

Read the manual for required fluids and capacities. If you are planning on tracking the car note special requirements for oil specs and diff fluid change requirement.

As to the filter: GM part number is also listed there.
Given early C7s had filter related motor failures (as stated by GM) id stick to OEM part for warranty's sake.

Cheers!

I always use OEM filters during the warranty period, so there’s never any dispute if there’s an oiling-related problem with the engine.

Purolator PureOne was a good value (relatively cheap, good seals, good filter media and very good flowing outlets). I think they stopped making it this year as I cannot find it anymore.

I’ve since switched to Wix HP.

Looked at K&N and Amsoil (nearly the same filter), but I can never justify the price vs. others. Great filters, but too much $$ for what it is.

I figure GM doesn't want to pay for warranty engine work so their filters should should do a good job.

I've heard that Wix makes a very good filter, while a Fram filter seems to be a hand grenade.

Another thing to consider, magnetic oil drain plug.

And 10 quarts in my LT1 puts the level right in the middle of the dip stick hash marks, not the top.
I use to be anal, and would have to add another quart or so to get to the top of the hash marks, but with 10 quarts sloshing around in there I figure it's fine where it is now.

This brings up a great question....Can a regular drain pan handle 10 quarts of oil? I need to check my pan for a measurement.

Not usually. I use a 3.5 gallon bucket.

I used a FLoTool oil drain pan from Autozone - no worries with it holding 10qts+ of oil.

I used the Mobile 1 filter at the 500 mile oil change and will be buying the same filter again for this weekend as the car just hit 1500 miles.
