I recommend you remove the digital readout and just enjoy the car. :-)

Why manufacturers have removed digital readouts from the gauge package - too many concerned customers.

Heck even my Honda Jazz only has a 'cold light'...on until warmed up to some temperature and then no temperature indication what so ever. I drive in bliss!

The factory thermostat is 90 celcius which is 192 degrees.

So if I can remember mine used to only get to around 170 F or so. I had to replace my thermostat with a new GM PN, after I did that I get the normal 200F operating temperature. Apparently there is an issue with the older PN that must not allow it to fully close.

The factory coolant gauge is an idiot light, which is in line with a lot of cars out there.

What this means is the gauge will stay at a set point when it's kind of warmed up (maybe 70 C or 158 F) to when it's very much overheating (maybe 120 C or 248 F). After the engine is very much overheating, it will move off the usual spot and show that the car is overheating.

Very few cars have a real temperature gauge. C7 Corvette after 2014 MY has a functional water temperature gauge that will actually reflect your coolant temperature.

If you want to know your real water temperature in real time, you need an OBD2 reader with live data capability. Camaro's equipped with PDR will also record the minimum and maximum coolant temperature of a given lap.

I would say 180 F isn't too cold when you are cruising in cool weather. Check the coolant temperature when you are idling. There should be specs in the factory service manual that will show if the engine is really running a little cool.

IMO, there should really be an option for those who care and those who don't, especially if you own a sports car.

Remember that most engines nowadays feature an aluminum block, which is more prone to warping when overheated. I would really want to know if my car is overheating ASAP, especially if I am on a track. That said, I think 6th Gen Camaro's do inform you about engine overheating and will go into limp mode.

With a 194 degree t-stat you should never see 180 degrees after the car is warmed up and the thermostat has opened.

I don't think it's quite that, but it is a computer generated readout. As others have pointed out, it starts to move pretty soon after you start the car. I suspect this is by design. I would guess it is only close to linear in the 190 to 210 range, which is good enough for most purposes.

Use the water temp digital read out thats in the DIC. The water temp changes all the time, shows 1 or 2 degree increments , its that sensitive.

Didn't even know we had that.
Something else to distract me

The needle is closer to 190*F

210-160= 50

50/2= 25

160+25= 185 (middle point)

25/2= 12.5 (+/- is quarter points)

185+ 12.5= 197.5

I just switched clusters and my LT1 was running 180-190(ish) on the numerical scale
The gauge always had shown 190(ish)

With the SS cluster, the gauge shows the same as everyone else. I haven't watched the DIC version, but it doesn't seem to have numerical values anyway. It has a bar gauge.

Your math assumes the scale is linear throughout the full range. I don't think so. Mine starts to move above 160 within 1 minute of startup even when it's 30 degrees out (just a blip, but it moves).
Stock stat opens at 90 C or 194 F. That fits with a 200 F operating temp.

Of course, it's linear because the next numerical graduation is 260 and that's 50*F above 210 with the exact same graduations in between.

That being said, it comes out to 197.5*F (+/- sensor, gauge, wiring, and/or programming irregularities)

I never bothered to watch the actual gauge on either cluster (during warm up)

On the LT cluster I always watched the numerical DIC version. That number always floated due to fan cycling, thermostat modulating and heater operation.

The SS cluster was put in on Saturday night and I haven't really drove it to play with all the settings or observe it in detail.

I pay most attention to oil temp. THAT temp tells you when your engine is actually warmed up completely.

Sorry. The scale is linear, but I don't think the response is linear.
