Anyone know of an eco-friendly brake dust agent??

Hey folks.

So, I did try searching online breifly, but did not have much luck finding anything specific to an agent that dissolves brake dust but is not toxic to the environment, that I can use in my driveway with a pressure washer.

Anyone have any experience with this and know of an agent carried by any big name chains that doesn't cost an extra 75 f***ing dollars a litre to do the right thing for all the animals that inhabit the pond in my backyard?

Pressure and plain water alone from the washer takes all the bugs off just fine, but THESE RIMS... in the name of all that is UN-F***ING-HOLY... they are THE most WRETCHED thing I have ever had to clean on a vehicle in my entire life. lol. I just want to spray-soak and then rinse and be done.

Soon as I get the extra cash- those mutherf***ers are GONE for something smoother and easier to maintain.

Armor All makes a brake dust repellant for wheels that does help.

Go to the wash and wax section here and there are countless articles on wheel coatings and protectants you can put on that make the brake dust a lot easier to get off. One is in my sig .If you want to get rid of the brake dust, you have to go to something like a powerstop pad although it’s not for racing. Plenty of spray on ceramic products you can put on now that make it easy to just use car wash soap.

Glen has some great tips to help you clean and protect your car. I would add Chemical Guys Diablo wheel gel to the list of wheel cleaners to look at.

Just get some powerstop pads and never deal with it anymore.

Thanks for tips! Going to those pads sounds like the way to start.

I understand the OP's point about being responsible and caring for the environment and all of it's inhabitants but isn't the brake dust itself toxic to the environment? So, if you're cleaning with a non-toxic agent but it's mixing with a toxic agent the end result is toxic anyway.

The best solution for me is to just rinse, hand/brush wash them (I use a nylon wrapped sponge), and rinse again. After they dry, I wipe them down with a damp terrycloth towel.

I have been using this method for years on all my cars, including my 1LE. I simply spray them with Simple Green, wait a few minutes, hose off and then a quick soapy wipe and rinse, the Simple Green rinses 95% off instantly without any effort. The soapy wipe comes out "clean", it is just to remove any residue the spray left behind.

Quick, simple and my wheels and calipers are clean. Works every time!

The Powerstop pads are a great option just note you will lose some braking power. Also at high speeds braking you will get some pulsation. So there are trade offs for less dust. I still feel the trade offs are worth it because I can still stop fine and my wheels don't look trashed after 50 miles of driving.

Even the "new" simple green?

z23 pads are as good as stock for me and I do get some pulsation after hard use just like i did with the stock pads. i just did pads and not rotors. No way I would go back to stock pads.

"new"??? The bottle I used this past weekend was just purchased last month, so I suppose that is "yes"? Assuming there was a formula change or something? No idea, but it still works as it always has, at least for what I use it for.
As a heavy de-greaser it stinks, but totally annihilates brake dust!

Spray and watch the black dust just float away......

I will also vote for the Z26 powerstop or whatever version is right for your car model.
