Track season is over for the Camaro; damn Mustangs...

Took the car to the dragstrip today chasing bragging rights against my brother-in-law's Mustang GT. It should have been a glorious day and a wonderful end to the drag racing season in northern Ohio; the weather was 74 with clear skies dipping into the 60's come nightfall. The track was prepped well. The engine was tuned and pulling hard; should have been a GREAT day!

Pass 1 - I forgot to turn off the traction control before the burnout, spun off the line and lost to my brother. That's ok, I have more time. I lowered the pressure in the Nittos to help with the launch.

Pass 2 - I had a good burnout but didn't get to run my brother-in-law. It's a good thing because I must have been dreaming about pumpkin pie when the tree lights started firing off and I launched at about 1,000 rpm. The worst part was the tire wobble during the shifts (you can clearly see it in the video). F-that!

Pass 3 - Last pass of the night and I got to run against my brother-in-law; this was my chance. I raised the tire pressure back up and had an excellent burnout. I launched around 3,500 rpm, although I was still late on the tree. I should have been ok because my car pulls harder on the top end than his. Well...the already worn stock clutch said "F!#k You" and decided I was done racing before the 60' mark.

I've yet to decide if the worst part was losing twice to my brother-in-law (and his Mustang) or the smart ass announcer at the end of the third video.

Anyway, the car managed to make it home under it's own power, but barely. Time to buy more parts and plan the winter upgrades. Hope you all have a better end to your season!

The videos are here, enjoy my agony!

The thing about drag racing is that it looks easy but the concentration the preparation and starting line routine needed to be successful needs to be worked at.

Then you need to deal with mechanical Gremlins which sometimes pop up.

Too bad about your clutch but at least you limped it home.

Good luck beating your BIL next spring

For sure - and this is the first manual I've ever raced; it was certainly more straightforward with the automatic but still a lot to think about!

The Mustang is a 6 speed; seems geared pretty low because he was in 2nd real soon after leaving.

I only got about 25k miles on it, but a big part of that is because I taught my son to drive manual in this car before I did the upgrades and it took him a while to figure that out. By the time he was competent it had worn a good amount. Probably would have been ok with stock parts, but the upgrades accelerated the premature death.

Damn kids ;-)
