ZL1 burning oil at an accelerated rate
Ok so I have a 2018 ZL1 1LE. Currently has 21K miles. I purchased the car with 9k miles back in November of 2019.
When I left dealership car was fully serviced. Oil change light came on at 15,000 est miles. I had oil changed at a reputable shop near me that always does oil changes when I don't feel like laying under it myself or going on base to the hobby shop and their lifts..... Guy tells me "Hey it's gonna be a little extra cause that thing takes TEN quarts..." After the surprise of hearing TEN quarts, I was like 'yeah man whatever it takes bro..." And he says "Hey btw, your car was two quarts low when you brought it in. It wasn't even reading on the dip stick." So now my ears perked up. Cause no way in hell does a new car with no leaks burn two quarts of oil in like 6k miles..... So at first I think maybe the old dealership didn't know what the **** they were doing and underserviced it..... Unlikely but possible.. Fast forward to like four days ago.... Car now has 21K On it..... Oil percentage left from the oil change at 15K is like 33% left.... So I figured a perfect time to check the level..... Nothing on the dipstick...... So I had to purchase two more quarts of MOBIL 1 syn and service myself right there..... sure enough after two quarts it was high up on the stick but in the operating range... So here's my question for the masses..... Bring it to the dealership and Immediately do what???? Order a compression test or an engine diagnostic???? Cause oil burning at this rate is motor death as far as i understand... And I want to know early if I'm going to need to get a free LT4...... thought's opinions???

If your ZLE is not modded then you still have warranty left. Next oil change or if needed now take it to a Chevy dealer and let them do the oil change and mention that the engine is using so many quarts between change intervals so the complaint can be documented by a service advisor. My ZL1 was about a quart low a couple of weeks ago and doesn’t seem to be using any now. Mine has about 15,000 miles now and I’m constantly checking the level every week before driving 2 to 3 days of each week depending on weather conditions of course. Hope I have given you some info to help you.

And yes our LT4 engines take 10 quarts to fill as does the LT1 engine.

The only thing I hate about that is paying the service department some ridiculous amount of money to change my oil when Johnny next door can do it for way less.
But I feel what you're saying ........ yeah cuz something dont' sit right with me about a car using a couple of QUARTS of oil between changes.... and lots of people on this forum have ZERO consumption issues.....

Yeah I do understand what you are thinking but the oil usage needs to be documented by GM just in case you do have a bad engine. It will hopefully be easier if it’s checked and documented by GM for a engine replacement under your drivetrain warranty.

Yeah all good... I'm gonna bring it to the dealer with my findings so far and see if they'll work me something where they can document it...

at what usage level would you think is too much?
1 quart within say 5000miles? 2 quarts? For instance what about 1 quart of usage within 1500miles but over an 8 month interval? |

I would think that a quart used in 5000 miles is not too bad but some folks would on this forum. Usage depends on your driving habits and how well you take care of your car.

The dealership here where I live will let you bring your own oil but they have to supply the oil filter. My question and concern would be if they used your oil to do the service or the oil they have in stock. I like and use Valvoline synthetic 5w30 in mine and I wouldn’t know if they put it in my ZL1 or Mobil 1 what they use.

You just need to check your oil more often. The dealer will likely do nothing, if it's only a quart every 3000 miles....

I'm having a similar problem with only 10k miles. Although its been about 2 quarts in maybe 1500-2000 miles. I've been advised by a gm parts manager to tell them about it like stated before and ask for an oil consumption test. That's pretty much where I'm at. Good luck
