Another thing is that those maps rely on having data, which you won't always have on a road trip. Granted, downloading the map in advance can mitigate the issue, but sometimes people just take detours on a whim, which limits the functionalities of maps that rely on Internet.
I take it you haven't used Maps or kept up on the updates. Per Maps documentation

Navigation works offline just by setting up your route when you have a connection. Maps will automatically download the info you need to get to your destination. This is completely independent of your manually downloaded map areas.

So as long as you are connected and decide to take a different route, it will continue to auto download the route offline as you travel. I have yet to run into a situation where Maps isn't working and we travel all kinds of rural areas on the Harley and in the Camaro.

As for HUD, to each his own. I have it in my car and I turn it off, it's annoying to me.

Well, I tried Waze once or twice before. Didn't like how AA worked. I don't like the fact that I have to plug and unplug the phone and having a wire dangling out the whole time.

Actually on Apple CarPlay I don’t know about android, there’s a map app called “Here we go” it works offline no cell plan needed. Just download the state or the whole USA or even different countries. It works by the gps on your phone. It wasn’t compatible on CarPlay before but it is now.

I hear ya. I normally don't plug mine in. I connect it via Bluetooth and just listen to the directions over the stereo as they come up. I couldn't' tell you the last time I actually looked at the maps screen while driving. I just let my phone connect via Bluetooth. It auto starts Pandora and if I need turn by turn directions, I put the address into Google Maps on my phone and start it. Then the phone goes in my pocket and stays there until I'm parked. Everyone is different though.

That's interesting. So you essentially run a voice only nav and never even glance at the screen to see which lane you need for a turn or exit?

We can agree to disagree about GM's factory navigation. I do see how google maps is visually superior to the built-in nav, but the HUD and DIC integration with the OEM solution, plus its reliability (especially with the routes I drive) as well as the freedom from any phone tether have won me over, at least for the time being.

Yep, Correct. I do that on my bike or auto. Google Maps when providing directions says things like... "Use the 2nd to right lane..." etc... It tells you which lane you should be in. My phone does not leave my pocket when I'm riding or driving. Not until I'm parked.

What do you do when you get a call about your car's extended warranty right in the middle of an important maneuver?

I wish my EU spec Camaro had that. I've used the built-in navigation many times, but it doesn't have this feature here.

I bought the update but haven't installed it yet. Instructions say car needs to be running and update takes up to 50 minutes. Seriously? Can anyone confirm this takes 50 minutes? Who want to hang around their car for 50 minutes while it's running in the driveway?

Yes, it does take 40-50 minutes, and even has the infamous "Windows style" looooong pause at 99%.

I install these in service mode (holding the start button for 5+ seconds, clutch/brake pedal not applied) with the battery tender connected. As you said, who wants to idle their engine for an hour just to update something.

So, installs ok? Instructions explicitly state not to install in accessory/service mode. Wonder if it's only due to a potential battery rundown issue? Seems odd it wouldn't work in that mode. I would prefer it to sit in the garage, on a tender, installing in service mode. Thanks

It's all good, I did the 2020 and the 2021 updates this way, zero issues whatsoever.

I think they state not to install in service mode specifically to avoid bricking something due to battery rundown, as you also suspect. Accessory mode with its 10-minute timeout is a clear no-no, but service mode works fine.
