2019 ZL1 1LE Oil Preference

Hey all. Hopefully there's not another thread specifically on the 2019 ZL1 1LE oil topic (I know 2019 is diff than previous years) because I can't find anything and am not a fan of clogging the forum.

With that said, what oil do all of you 2019 ZL1 1LE owners use? I'm a big fan of Amsoil and am thinking the 0W-40 signature series with their oil filter. Thoughts?

Thanks and Happy Memorial Day all 🇺🇸💪🏽

Mobil 1 0W40... exactly what's on your oil cap.

This goes for 17 & 18 ZL1s too and Corvette. 15W50 is required for track on the ZL1 1LE and ZR1 only.

You're going to want a Dexos approved oil if you want keep your warranty and avoid issues if you ever blow it up. If the Amsoil isn't Dexos, I'd stick with Mobil 1 ESP 0W-40.

Thanks guys. I am debating between the Mobil 1 and Amsoil Signature Series. This is from Amsoil website..

"Original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) like GM* have addressed the issue by designing tests to determine a motor oil’s ability to prevent LSPI. Signature Series Synthetic Motor Oil achieved 100 percent protection against LSPI1 in the engine test required by the GM dexos1 Gen 2 specification - zero occurrences were recorded throughout five consecutive tests."

I'm not sure the difference between Dexos1 Gen 2 vs the Dexos requirement on the vettes and ZL1 1LE's. Any insight on this?

AMSOIL wording may suggest they meet a given GM Dexos standard, but they are not Dexos licensed by GM. And according to GM warranty one must use Dexos2 certified oil. This is not unlike what other manufacturers demand in order to provide free of cost warranty (5 yrs for drive train and 8 yrs for emission systems for Camaro)

Perhaps this will be of help:

If any doubt go on Dexos website. If you dont see the oil listed there in Dexos2 section, then it is not authorized by GM. Cheers!

EDIT: Dexos 1 gen 2 is an updated Dexos 1 standard and it is NOT the same as Dexos 2 standard.

Don't try to reinvent the wheel here if you want warranty. Run Gm's Mobil 1 and enjoy the car!

Well said. Albeit GM gives us flexibility to choose from any Dexos2 approved oil of proper grade as no oil is mentioned by name any more, including factory fill.

Are guys with ZLE's really dumping their 0w40, filling with 15w50 for the track, then dumping the 15w50 and refilling with 0w40 afterward? Seems insanely expensive.

Thanks fellas! I've always liked Amsoil but know these engines are very specific so I'll be running Mobil-1 and calling it a day.

Any preferences on oil filters? K&N? Delco?

I was under the impression that you could use the Ow40 for both track and street??? Wasn't that the purpose for developing this specific oil???

For 2019 yes.

17-18 is still the bounce back and forth I beleive.

Read my thread below titled CAMARO OILS LISTED AND COMPARED for helpful info.

In short, ZL1 1LE should run 0 or 5W40 Dexos2 for street and MUST run SAE 15W50 for track because of sticky tires and aero causing pick up issues with lower viscosity oil.

All OTHER V8 Camaros can use 0 or 5W40 Dexos2 oil for BOTH street and track. Or Dexos 5W30 for street ONLY.

I suspect most ZL1 1LEs get trailered to/from track given their tires only last up to 3 days (fronts).
So most likely have 15w50 in them permanently.
Note that given a high SAPS content of this oil any daily driving (which usually doesnt see high operating temps, or worse: mild temps only) would not be best for the motor and defo bad news for cats.

I use Mobil 1, K&N or Royal Purple filters. Usually whichever is cheaper at the time.
