GM has not changed recommended oil. It is still 0w40 Dexos2 (or 5w40 Dexos2) or 5w30 dexos1 gen2 depending on intended use.

What GM had changed is factory fill from 5w30 to 0w40.
They've also made the latter available to the dealers, who didnt carry it until then (so they couldnt service track going cars unless ower brought his own oil).

Ive tried to explain it all in my OP on page 1
I agree we're in a proverbial loop. And also greatly appreciate the time and effort you put into this thread - definitely a wealth of information.

But I respectfully disagree with your statement that GM has not changed the recommended oil.

My 2018 manual clearly says that 5W-30 dexos1 is the recommended oil. Also, the oil fill cap says the same thing. Then there is a caveat in the manual for track use, where they recommend the 0W-40 or 5W-40 dexos2.

The 2020 manual clearly states that 0W-40 dexos2 is the recommended oil. Period. The manual does add a caveat saying "If 0W-40 dexos2 oil is not available, SAE 5W-30 dexos1 full synthetic engine oil may be used for street use." So 5W-30 dexos1 is an official alternative, but not the recommended oil.

Anyone picking up a new oil cap, check the inside for excessive plastic flashing. Probably wouldn't ever cause an issue, but I cleaned mine up.

It is NOT Mobil 1. It's produced by Warren Distribution.

Yes thanks figured that out after I posted. Its has gotten pretty good reviews and with a breakdown temp greater than 260 degrees It will be fine for my street driving.

Agree! But what has changed is the sequence of the caveats, as GM has changed factory fill. Also, 0/5w40 is a better oil vs 5w30 and dealerships carry it now. So, strictly imo, if somebody does not track their car, proper 5w30 is fine and allowed as an alternative. Moreover, GM never issued any bulletins on this subject, nor informed owners of prior MY cars of this change. And nobody is *obliged* to keep checking latest manuals
But, i agree, the wording has changed indeed. Cheers!

No. Just use what the manual recommends for both street and track: proper 0w40 or 5w40. Cheers!

Thanks for this very informative thread!

FYI - was doing some perusing of the Mobil 1 product page and looks like a couple of new things have come out since the last post on this thread:

-There looks to now be a Dexos 1, Gen 3

-In addition to 0W-40, looks like Mobil 1 now has a Dexos 2 version of 5W-30 (though not sure which of the "sub-brands" that this falls under (aka "Extended Mileage", "Supercar", etc, etc)

Thanks for your kind words and the latest update. Yep, technology marches on, no doubt about it. Bottom line: it seems like there are even more choices now. Cheers!

I had been running the Valvoline MST 5W40 up until it was discontinued. Searched for a replacement Dexos 5w40 and could only find Amalie, nothing else was available. Havoline was supposedly making a 5w40 Dexos, but could never find it.

Now the Amalie is no longer around, ended up getting two 5qt jugs of Mobil 1 5w40 European formula... not Dexos certified.
Don't want to run a 0w oil in my car, nor do I want to run a 5w30 in the summer.

Car doesn't burn any oil so I doubt it will kill the cats any time soon.

Motul 8100 x clean 5W40 is Dexos2. At least when I used it last. Cheers, Bill
