I have a 2.9 Whipple laying around with port injection from Crawford Racing on it, wondering what the 'upgrade' they offered you/deal you worked out was...I don't need my 2.9 Whipple, bought a 2650 when I decided to not deal with port injection. PM me with details if this is complicated....

It's not complicated. Whipple sells you just the 3.0 for 5k and you reuse the rest of the 2.9 kit. You still have to find a buyer for the 2.9 or leave it on the shelf.

In your opinion King... 2650 for my 6.2 truck is only available through Lingenfelter for 9750. The 3.0 is 7295. I can't see it as I've been extremely happy with the 2.9 on my other one. Your thoughts?

I would get the 3.0 for that cost difference.

Ted you know I'm a Maggie guy but King is right so go with the Whipple. So King don't have a freaking heart attack here since I don't have a real dog in this hunt. If it's reliable and you'll be happy with it why wouldn't you.

Install Update

Happy New Years All. I wanted to provide an update on my purchase and install process and discuss the good and the bad so far.

I was able to purchase an upgrade kit from the 2.9 to the 3.0 unit direct from Whipple. This meant that I would be reusing some of the existing parts such as the belt drive pulleys/tensioners/, radiator, IC pump, wiring harnesses etc. I was sent the new head unit, a full set of cooling hoses (from a full kit - more to come), bolts/nuts and I opted for the snout for a 103 throttle body. I was also sent the subframe spacer kit which I need to reach out to Whipple to see what drives this need. Not sure if its to facilitate future port injection plates or due to the back of the blower being taller then the previous unit, see pictures.

Once I started the install using the provided install manuals (see attached), I noticed that I was missing a few needed parts such as;

1. The new PCV setup (Ref Steps 58-61 - Needs to be installed for blower
clearance - I have a MM Catch Can)
2. Missing the fittings for the PCV Valve and Brake Booster Line to the
snout(Steps 64-65)
3. Barb for the bypass valve (Step 78)

The bigger issue and where the "bad" comes into play is that both wiring harness's from the 2.9 would not work due to them being too short. As you can see in the manual I attached, the Map sensor relocated to the passenger side of the blower not driver, the Evap solenoid is now on the driver side of the blower and not the passenger, the IC pump is now on the driver side not the passenger side.

I then reached out to Whipple to find out that I should have never received a full cooling hose kit, that I was supposed to reusing some of the existing hoses to keep the pump in the original location as well the expansion tank which the new kits don't even come with one. Even with that logic the harness's would still not work due to the relocation of the aforementioned devices. I didn't have an issue with these missing items or mistakes until it took almost 2 weeks to rectify. The "bad" was the customer service I got and the "they we will get this figured out today" responses I received during this. They eventually ended up sending me the missing parts as well as the new harnesses and even a new IC pump which is now a bosch product versus the old unit that is used in Tesla's I believe.

The subframe spacer install was tedious but overall not too bad. It took me much longer then expected but that was due to my own doing. Mainly, make sure you get the spacer and bolt started on step 7 before moving on any further. Due to the angle and curvature of the cradle at this location, it makes it awfully tough to get it back aligned once the other spacers are in in the steps after. Also there is a pair of slotted spacers, the extra wide slotted ones that are used in step 9, see attached pictures. Make sure you use those there and not in another location lol. Learn from my mistakes.

The good is that the blower itself is a very nice well put together unit. I like that the ic brick is removal but built in to the lid unlike the 2.9 is. I am a little weary that the new unit does not come with a tank like the 2.9 did. I may be reusing the old one just for added capacity. Install overall is pretty straight forward otherwise. I did a test run yesterday just to verify IC pump function and check for leaks etc. Did not start the vehicle, just accessories on. Ignore the hoses sitting on the back of the head unit, they will be properly installed at a later date. I plan on sending the unit to get ported soon hence the look.

I also plan on installed a triple pump set up shortly. Will install port injection once available from whipple or someone else.

I will provide another update at a later date. Feel free to ask questions or if you want some different pictures etc as I will be taking my time with this as parts are available etc.

- Norm

Quick Update:

So currently I am waiting for a few kits and parts to ship;
  1. Cordes Performance Trunk Ice Tank
  2. Fore Triple Pump Kit
  3. New LT4 Intake - Manley Extreme Duty Exhaust Valves w/ associated parts

I would like to replace the Whipple radiator with a larger unit since I already have the bumper off. Does anyone offer one that one of you has used? C&R maybe?

Question- what end game - approx. rwhp/torque are you looking for with this build? Assume you will track the car? What psi will you be running the Whipple at? (3.75 pulley I see in pics) Keep us posted on the progress.
Thanks!

It's nice to see another option on the market.

I have a 3.0L here now that we're going to drill for port injection.

The customers car is equipped with a DSX aux pump so that will likely be the limiting factor on how far we can go with this build.

Nice looking except for the Cooler lines running over the windshield cowl. Will stay like that? No other option to route them?
