I've had a 2.9 Gen 5 Whipple 175RF for about 3 years now. Apart from the drive coupler that disintegrated and bypass valve that I am currently needing to replace (torn diaphragm) I havent had any real issues.

Question; why didn't Whipple simply further develop the 2.9 rather than re-engineer for new rotor packs etc? Was it because of so many reported failures & issues?

The 2.9 5/3 rotor pack was already tweaked once (Gen3 to Gen4) that resulted in maybe 15-20 WHP gains at the same boost level. The 5 rotor in that pack spins way too fast once you try to rock and roll, as I’m finding out. It has been a very good blower IMO, but the new one is a big leap forward. The new Gen5 is 4/3 and moves a LOT more air without over spinning one of the rotors. Filling the rotors with air efficiently is what matters and the new 4/3 is simply much better at doing that. I suspect it will give a 2650 all it can handle and probably why Maggie is looking at at 3100 IMO.

Maybe JMS will get that one on a customer car and give us some numbers and his thoughts on the blower. Should be interesting over this winter and some more will be out next year for some real-world track times instead of dyno numbers well see hopefully this winter.

Obviously this is not apples to apples, but I’ve been watching some of the Mustang ET’s and traps with the Whipple’s to start getting ideas relative to the 2650’s. The quickest and fastest I’ve seen has been in the 7.90’s at ~178 MPH. That is at a 3880 lb race weight, so you can safely assume he’s making around ~1430 RWHP through a TH400. That is the new Whipple 3.8 as well, not the 3.0. I think we’ll hit 178 with my 2650 all in, but my car is a little over 100 lbs lighter also. Doesn’t mean a lot, but more data points in absence of the new Whipple’s on our cars. Lol

Whipple 3.0 has been 171 in the 1/4. I think midnight performance went even faster but I can't find the post to back it up.

I've said it before that if it performs on the Lt1 like it does on the 5.0 its going to be a formidable blower to whatever is out there in a PD SC.

I don't know why it wouldn't. The Whipple 2.9 performs similar on a Coyote as it does the LT1. It's a 148-150mph 1/4 mi supercharger max on a full weight car. It's out of airflow with the rotor pack to go any further. A Kong X port 1.7 will make the same power but the 2.9 still has better cooling. The 3.0 has different rotors(4x3 vs 4x5) to allow it to flow much more air. Coyotes have seen 100+ whp gains switching over from a 2.9 to 3.0 with boost levels in the 15-17psi range. Obviously on a 10psi the gains are likely going to be much less. I think I seen a report of +30whp on a low boost setup.

It definitely seems like the 3.0 is going to be like the 2650 performance and efficiency wise. When I went from the 2.9 to a non-ported 2650 it picked up over 90 RWHP at the same MAP level. I bet Jokerz and others will be able to port it to match a ported 2650 as well. I’m curious to see if the gains stay linear at really high RPM’s (25k+).

Agree...the 2650 is a solid unit though. So it's going to be tough to beat... but I think the 3.0 will rival it anyway. My guess is it will be slightly ahead vs a unported 2650 but will be really close with a ported 2650. At least that is how it has played out on the Coyote. The 3.0 outperforms the VMP 2650 in stock form, but the ported VMP is right there.

Can anyone that has seen one verify if it is already set up for port injection?

Last email I got from Whipple on 10/25:

We are working on a price for those who want to upgrade from the 2.9 to the 3.0. I should have that in the next 30 days

As for port injection as of now it does not accept it but we are also working on it

We have just released the LT1 Camaro kit and as of now there has not been any back to back testing with the 2650

Interesting that Kong is offering a port job on the 3.0 too. Has anyone seen what the ported 3.0 is capable of?

So far only 1 actual "customer" has received a 3.0 and that is for a LT4. Other than that only places like SVE have been getting the 3.0 kits. SVE raised the horsepower from 1000hp on their Yenko cars to 1100hp. Not much info otherwise.

Yeah it’s been painful waiting for Whipple to get back in the LTx game. This 3.0 blower was supposed to be out last summer, then fall, then December for January 2022 shipping, etc etc.
