Poll: Green Panel vs K&N filters

Hi Guys,

I want to improve my airflow while maintaining OEM appearance. I know K&N has been around for many decades but know nothing about Green Panel.

I welcome your comments,
Chris

Chris, I put a Summit Racing panel air filter in my 2017 and am satisfied with it so far. It looks like a K&N filter and can be cleaned and cost about $45.00. Either panel filter is a good choice.

Don's flame suit and turns on the oxygen tank...

I have seen countless dyno runs where a oil soaked type filter like K&N actually made less power than a high quality paper filter.

I have used both and they are of similar quality. I give the slight nod to Green because it seemed higher quality. The pleats were neater in the Green. Tests claim the Green flows more too (unconfirmed). The fitment was OEM perfect with the Green too.

A Green filter is my preferred choice if available for the vehicle. K&N is my next choice. I have Green filters in my ZL1 and Silverado and K&N in my Blazer because a Green is not available.

This study may be a few years old, but it's still valid. I'll never use a K&N filter again.

Damn it Mark. LoL! Now I can't use the why are all K&N filters sold to professionals 2 ply cotton non oiled vs 4 ply cotton oiled the street guys get? K&N makes a non oiled 2 ply filter they supply to NASCAR and several NHRA teams and many other sanctioning bodies. It actually works from what I have read. Next topic can be SplitFire spark plugs, and why the car they sponsored was busted not using their plugs. I believe they were using Autolite plugs. Why because SplitFire is a joke, electricity is always going to follow the path of least resistance. No way to make a plug that lives in that environment actually go to two different places.

Mark, thank you, that was a LOT of good information collected under some very strict testing conditions. Absorbing it though, was like trying to take a drink from a fire hose. Too bad there isn’t anything out there (yet) that compares engines with and without Catch Cans under similar testing conditions.

When it comes to protecting the engine from dirt, AC Delco was tops. While the data was collected in 2004, it would indeed be interesting to see how the AC Delco stacks up against the popular CAI’s that many are using today.

I pretty much threw cold water on this thread. The reality is the K&N filters let much more dirt pass through them, yet clog sooner, than a paper filter. But they initially flow more air!! So does cutting a big hole in a paper filter.

Now don't get me started on magnets on the fuel line to increase HP. Or those swirly inserts that increase intake turbulence to make more power.

Second that! Back when I did oil samples on my WRX.... (First new car) I had a k&n type filter and was getting extremely high silicon readings as well as aluminum. Switched to a green filter, silicon levels were back at 0. Never again will I run K&N or any oil type cotton filter.

That’s it, I’m leaving it OEM since I also like that it draws from outside.

Thanks for everyone’s input,
Chris

The OEM is actually a free flowing paper type filter and I’m thinking about putting mine back in!

K&N for me on all my automobiles. Never had any problems with the ol' K&N.
