28-30 is normal. The engineer’s response to your issue is bs. They want to avoid replacing your pump because it’s a big expense. I bet they are hoping it fails after the warranty is up. If 20 psi was normal then all ZL1s should be running 20psi.

Mine tends to fall between the 20 and 30 marks on the gauge when hot idling. It varies but seems to be around 21 to 22 maybe. Mine was built April 10, 2017.

29 psi is lowest I’ve seen with oil temps at 260* after hard driving runs. Build date, January 29th, 2018.

Average of a 5 min log is 32.8 psi @ 180°C using 0-40w Mobil 1 and PF64 filter. Looking around in other logs I see ~30-31 psi @ 200°C at idle
I peak at about 65 psi at 7k rpm

If the pressure (psi) goes below these levels it will set the oil pressure light

I actually have not tested this table, just was digging around in HPT, I "assume" it is correct. It is from a LT4 ZL1.

Make sure your idle isn't dropping. Mine will randomly dip lower at idle and then the oil pressure goes down to like 27—28.

Ok so first off please don’t think I’m trying to argue or make excuses for GM because I’m not. I hope you don’t have an issue with your pump that’s for sure.
But I wanna bring this to light as maybe I’m not seeing what you guys are. Also I’ve been a licensed tech for about 25 years and have worked on a very large array of cars and heavy equipment and very specialized equipment so I’m confident I have some knowledge on the subject. Anyhow, from what i read in the other post it says GM says anything below 22psi at 1000rpm is a low limit. Ok, so at idle you are at 21psi. Idle to myself would be about 650rpm roughly say give or take 50 rpm. So if you look at your oil psi at 1000rpm I bet it bumps up probably well over 22psi. You might wanna check and see. Your pump may very well be fine. And again I could be wrong and maybe it doesn’t bump up at which point I’d be definitely concerned. Again, please don’t think I’m against you in any way. Trust me I’m on your side. Just thought I’d bring to light what has been written in the other thread and that maybe your pump is actually healthy. |

I changed the oiil to 15w50, did a HPDE and the idle pressure went down. I changed the oil back to 5w-30, and the pressure did not come back.

Hmmm. I must have missed the part of you putting the thinner oil back in and the pressure not coming back up. That is concerning I agree.
I have a machine at work that is a road grinder. We switched to running 10W30 in our equipment a few years ago. When this grinder is worked really hard the oil pressure warning will come on and will flicker the oil light. We have put mechanical gauges on it numerous times to monitor and it’s still safe as per the manufacturer which is Cummins. Yet we switched it back to 15W40 and no more issue with the exact same working conditions. I would have, much like yourself I’m sure, figured if the pressure went down with the 15w50 it would have come back up with the 5w30. Sounds to me like, without looking this up right now but I think I’m correct in my thinking regarding this specific LT4 oil pump, that the solenoid or whatever they use to stroke the pump for more oil psi, isn’t functioning correctly. This is my first thoughts off the top of my head while I’m chilling on a nice day enjoying a beer. |
