Thumbs up Best 6th gen handling performance: ZL1 or SS1LE ?

Hi Guys,

Only for those that have experienced the driving of both the 6th gen Camaro SS1LE & the ZL1 (non 1LE model). Which one is the most balanced handling sport car? Not talking about HP, we already know that based on power the ZL1 is superior. Which one would be the top driver's car?

Note: I didn't included the ZL1 1LE because is a more track focused model.

I include a comment from the August 2017 Motortrend's H2H of the Shelby GT350R VS the Camaro ZL1:

"That big lump of a supercharged V-8-while potent-puts way too much weight in exactly the wrong spot. For reference, the SS 1LE weighs in at 3,735 pounds. I will also go on record stating that I preferred the way the SS 1LE handled compared to the ZL1-and also to the GT350R."

I had a '17 SS 1LE for almost 3 years, and now the ZL1. I do NOT track the car, but when cornering aggressively you can feel a slight difference because of the additional weight up front on the ZL1, around 130 lbs But, more than made up for with the LT4 motor.

The zl1 will be able to put up better lap times but that does not equate to better handling. Sure the ss 1le is less powerful and slower, but its essentially the same chassis with less weight with better distributed weight at that.

I don't really think it's much of a question which one the better "handling" car is.

SS1LE is an insane performance bargain as far as laptimes go.

I don't think I could go back to the 1LE after the ZL1, BUT, I agree.

Thumbs up

Somehow it reminds me of two of the best handling cars from the 80's:
The 944 Turbo (951) was the fastest lap timer.
But the 944S2 (DOHC) was the more nimble and better balanced brother (slower but a joy to drive it).
Both cars were great on their own way.

The ss 1le is underpowered for the chassis/handling. You will always want more power.

Zl1 is more balanced imo, will be a lot more fun on the street

Disclaimer, i’ve only driven the ss. The handling limits are too high and it’s too composed to get your blood flowing on the street, (not talking about punching it around a corner, taking about a fast turn with high g load) The 1le has even higher limits. Which means most of the fun is jn the power. The SS is some of the most fun I’ve ever had launching. But beyond that, it was kinda boring. The whole time I was wishing I had a race track.

If it was mostly a track car, I’d probably go ss 1le. It’s pretty much designed by jesus to be the perfect entry level race car.

If you’ve ever played like gran turismo, the ss 1le is the low ranking race cars which never lose traction, super controllable, amazing handling, amazing brakes, and incredibly consistent......

Yeah except the dohc probably had a high rpm screamer, the ss and zl1 have a similar power curve, if anything the zl1 gets the nod

They were both DOHC engines, the S2 was a 16 valve 3.0L N/A engine that had a bit more torque. As for the 951 turbo, you can just imagine what an 80's turbo car feels like.

I drove a 944 for a decade after high school, fun cars!

Yes great cars. Their handling was top during the 80's

Thumbs up

Both the SS1LE & the ZL1 are great cars even the base SS is an outstanding sport car for the price. They compete above their weight without any sweat. Thanks to their Alpha chassis design

I'm sure I'd feel the same way.

Especially for most street action, which is roll racing or hard pulls. Ss 1le doesn't really hold a candle to the zl1 there.

You just don't let up with that nonsense about handling too good or being underpowered for the chassis lol. That's your opinion, apparantly you just like spinout machines. You can easily make an ss or ss 1le kick out the rear end if you want to and hoon around.
