Question Need A New Starter...Recommendations?

So my starter is going out on my LS3; hard startups after being warm (example stopping at gas station and starting it) and now that it's getting cold also it starts kinda hard in morning when temp is really low.

I have longtube headers and a lot of people say the heat from them fries the starter so is there an aftermarket starter that's better than OEM that will resist the heat and have a faster startup than stock?

:Thanks:
Some guys have the same hard start problem. Some guys are using Powermaster 9509. I've been looking for DIY replacement for it. No one unfortunately did this DIY.

A DIY for a starter?

Disconnect battery. Remove wires from starter. Remove two bolts holding starter to block. Pull starter out.
Reverse to reinstall.

Sorry Homeless, I have no starter recommendations.
I do know that when I had headers on a car in the '70s I replaced the starter every year.

Anyone have links to the better starter? And does it need to be on ramps or lift to change or could I do it in the parking lot? LS3 with longtubes

  1. Lift and securely support the front of the car or drive it up on ramps.
  2. Disconnect negative battery cable.
  3. Remove the three starter heat shield bolts. (8mm)
  4. Remove the heat shield.
  5. Unbolt the two starter mounting bolts (13mm) but do not try to remove the starter yet.
  6. Rotate the starter to get easier access to the back.
  7. Disconnect the electrical connector at the top/back of the starter.
  8. Remove the (13mm) nut securing the positive power cable to the starter.
  9. Remove the starter.
  10. Install in reverse order. I waited to install the heat shield until I tried starting the car in case I did something wrong. Once I verified the car started, I installed the heat shield.
I was going to take pictures and document the whole thing, but I was having a difficult time. Not because of the difficulty of the job, it was actually really easy. I have four hernias that I'm having surgery to repair in a couple weeks, and I was in a lot of discomfort working on the car. So I decided against taking pictures and just get the job done. At least I had my 12 year old son to help. He took care of the heat shield and handed me tools as I needed them.

Here's a video of the car starting with the new starter.

BTW, I found a new OEM starter on Amazon for $93.48 with Prime shipping.

Here is a post I found

Don't waste your money on expensive after market starters (unless you got crazy high compression ratio and need it )

Find a good deal on one from amazon or other online store. Or buy a rebuilt from a local part store with extended warranty and exchange them once hot start issue's happen over time...will happen again

I had a SBC s10 that would go through starters monthly with the headers Headman made for the conversion lol would turn spark plug boots to ash in about 4 months of DD

Amazon has that starter shield for 46.50 and summit was 65.50. They are the same product. Just a heads up

So much useful info (and people) on this forum - I learn more Gen5 stuff every day. Makes me forget all the digs and jabs unfortunately often seen.

Mine always seemed to happen in the winter. On my back, in the slush, fingers freezing... Thank goodness for Carhart jackets. Broken down starter box under my head.

I used to have to unbolt the headers at the top so I could push them over enough to weasel the starter out/in.

On my '79 Turbo Regal I changed an alternator every year. I had it down to 30 minutes or less. A mechanic told me that was from jack-rabbit starts. I replied that I will be changing it every year then

Use the starter heat shield it will work! I had the same problem this summer on my 69 El Camino. Once installed I never had another issue with it all summer long.
