From the best of days to easily the worst. Hit a raccoon
Started the evening with a sprint up the Storm King Hwy with my cousins. Was an amazing time! Car was great. Sadly on the way home while cruising at 80 on the highway a raccoon wanted to see my car up close. Not sure wether i should go through insurance or just cover it myself. If it was just the splitter i would def do it myself but I’m not sure how easy doing that grille is

I hit a raccoon in Mrs Number 3’s ATS a few years ago. Tried to clean it up but learned our comprehensive covered it. $250 deductible instead of the $1,000 for collision I thought I would have to use. So $250 was way better than $1000. Only embarrassed I didn’t know the difference, but I’ve never had a claim for hitting an animal.
My guess is the repair is far more difficult. The ATS was a rough one and with what I did it looked “better” but not new. Oh, and you must be young. This is far from the worst day you could have. The raccoon had a far worse day, lol.

You might have to go through insurance if your deductible is low enough, that grill means having to drop the whole nose clip to replace. Not impossible but a lot of work. Consider yourself lucky that you’re still safe and nothing more happened, good luck with the repairs.

I agree with Number 3. Check the deductible on your comprehensive portion of you auto policy and if the deductible is below $500.00 - I would use the coverage. You'll have well more that in just the cost of the parts. Comprehensive claims are not chargeable events and thus will not create a claims surcharge.
I also wish hitting a raccoon was the worst day I've had! But I can understand how it turned your nice drive into a sour event.

Yeah it looks like the insurance is the right route, bumper is dented, grille is broken, and splitter is toast. Deductable is $500 which is less than the cost to repair. Thanks for the input

Definitely use your insurance, that's why you have insurance.
On the positive side, it appears that you have no mechanical damage only cosmetic. A first rate body shop can make it look like it never happened. I took out a racoon in my 1994 z 28 back in the day and obviously the tire centered him because there was zero damage. The best sign of a great body shop is no sign at all (of their work). |

Bad night for the raccoon for sure, great job keeping the car on the road after meeting Mr. Raccoon. The paint alone is very expensive and if you had your front clear protected by 3M, the insurance route is the way to go. Get 3M clear protected after its fixed if you didn’t have it.

Yup. The front had a clear bra on it. I thought i was going to get away with just the splitter and grille but the bumper is dented where it meets the splitter. Just couldn’t see it in the dark

Sucks man, I know how it feels, probably nothing you could've done to dodge this one. Hope the insurance route works out, plus you'll have a brand new bumper, grille and an unscraped splitter

I ran over a raccoon once in my RX-8. Luckily, no apparent damage, but I did have a bad wheel bearing soon after. May or may not be related.
Anyway, it seems like just cosmetic damage which is fortunate. Some people end up with dented radiator and more mechanical issues. I would just try to get a quote to see how much the damage would cost you. Chances are, like the others mentioned, that insurance will be the better route for you if your deductible is low enough.

Many policies have $0 deductible for animal strikes - read your policy or call them...

Unless you have a high deductible, insurance will likely be the way to go. You're looking at an EASY $1,200 if you have to replace the bumper, diffuser and grill.
