Thanks Folks ... I'm taking it to the dealer tomorrow to see if they can replace it, and hopefully check to see if a critter is still in residence.

I've emailed the ceramic coating shop (where it's been for the last 1.5 weeks) to see what they have to say about the rodent damage, it really couldn't have happened anywhere else. I've never had it happen to a car in my driveway before, so I suspect that's not where it happened.

I had the same thing happen only near the front of hood area. I never saw any evidence of rodents either, took it to the dealer and they replaced it for me under warranty. Hopefully your dealer is as good as the one I frequent..
Good luck
Lee

as I recall my 94 Camaro was chewed up by rats. Had a CEL illum on day and found some gnawed on wiring. Rat poison laid out in several areas took care of the problem.

I think the mice use the strut brace bar to access the underside of your hood. Velcro a mouse trap with peanut butter to the bar. I had to do this to my MKX which sat outside but put the trap on the engine cover.

I have both

I cleaned out the garage and have my car in there now. I use one of the sonic mice "traps" out there and haven't seen mice in years. We store girl guide cookies out there, and they never get nibbled on.

Will replace the cloth and consider it a lesson learned.

There is NOTHING to prevent access into the car through the cabin filter slot. It is OPEN. A super easy access point for rodents..an absolutely stupid design.

After I had a mouse get into my 2017 ...then of course DIE back behind the blower motor....I fashioned some 1/8" screening over that stupid cabin air filter inlet. Problem solved.

I agree...that looks a lot like what a mouse would do.

THIS.

I have never had the problem but our Aprilia bike guys have posted pics of mice/rodents getting into the air intakes and making a mess and chewing wiring. Toyota apparently also has an issue with some cars because of soy based sheathing on wiring ()

I had no idea about the cabin air filter access someone else mentioned. Will check it out.

Got a pic? All i see, is a plastic grid with 1" square holes, covered by a rubber flap. No challenge for a mouse with any IQ at all.

Before you park your car back in your garage, set up some traps, and it wouldn't be out of the realm of sanity to fumigate your garage. Make sure the little varmints are dead. Then check things like the weather stripping on the bottom of your garage door, around the garage door, and if you have any other doors leading to the outside off your garage. Make sure the doors are tightly sealed, have no play, and have good weather stripping all around them.

Those little sob's can crawl through something the size of a pin hole because they have no vertebrae.

As others have stated it appears to be rodent damage. Take a look for any signs of feces underneath the engine cover, near the intake, etc. you may also want to check the cabin filter (which is usually located behind the glovebox) for nesting materials, food scraps, feces. Usually, once a rodent has entered the cabin the stench of feces and urine will be present and noticeable! I have seen people use circular mouse bait attached with zip-ties to various areas along the wiring harness, away from moving parts and not attached to fluid hoses. I also recommend tying a large number of fabric dryer sheets to these same areas underneath the hood and if needed place within the cabin filter box, the scent supposedly deters them from entering. Hopefully, if it is a rodent infestation you caught it early enough.
