Rim Damage from Tire Shop

I’m so angry. Tire shop scratched my rims when removing weights. Anyone ever have to get the black OEM rims repaired? Any idea what to expect for cost? I noticed it after I got home and the shop is closed so I have to fight with them but I’m sure it’s going to be “we are not responsible, blah blah”...

So they left the adhesive and gouge the metal getting the weights off? That's totally unacceptable.

Yep. Heading there in the morning to show them. I am hoping they cover the repair of both rims. Then, if I’m lucky, do I just repair them or do I add to it and have all four done but change the black to a charcoal or something else...

That’s BS. That’s gross negligence.

My shop usually leaves the adhesive and I have to remove that at home but they don't chisel it off! That's nuts.

A good wheel repair vendor charges about 125-150 dollars a wheel to fix and re-powdercoat a wheel. The better wheel weights use a tape adhesive that is much easier to remove. It actually looks more like a very strong double sided tape than traditional glue based adhesive. It is kind of dark blue in color which you normally dont see it because the weights sit on top of it (alot of people refer to them as PEEL and STICK wheels weights) and they are available in a black color for all of us BLACK wheel guys. . Discount Tire had to re-balance one of my wheels after they patched a tire and they pulled the weights off by hand and left the adhesive on the wheel and I used GOO GONE let it set for five minutes and then just rolled the adhesive off with my thumbs. I pay about 40.00 a wheel to mount and balance a tire and they use a touchless tire changer that costs about 30K. But in your case, even if they used that high dollar tire changer some idiot with a screw driver defeats the whole purpose. Also being careless when installing lugnuts is another way your wheels can get gubered up.

Literally off the rack and I think the tire shop threw it across the floor! TODAY! I hate tire shops. They even tried to say it just flaked off with their thumb. Unreal. Any way it can cost anywhere from $75 -250 a wheel. That probably won’t be too bad.

I am curious. Those wheels look like they are PAINTED and not POWDER COATED. Is that the case???

I am not trying to make excuses for the damage but powder coating is MUCH harder and probably doesnt come off like that. In your case, you really need to find a shop that has a touchless tire changer. It looks to me like the BAR they used to force the tire over the lip of the rim is what scratched those rims.

I always suggest that you take some pics BEFORE the tire mounting and let the tire installer know you have those so that any damage can be documented.

These are powder coated. It literally came off the rack this morning and was destroyed by the tire shop this afternoon. I have had a lot of problems with this little wheel project long story short they have mounted eight of these with no issues but today the wrong guy got a hold of the wheel and absolute demolished it. So the picture of it perfect hanging on the rack was taken two hours before it was destroyed by the tire shop. See how this goes tomorrow when I talk to the owner. He wasn’t there today. As for the OP the factory wheels are painted and can easily be touched up. I feel your pain and it sucks when people get paid to a job and have no clue what they are doing.

I use the same shop time after time and I've been making it a point to hand the keys and then ask them to take care of my wheels...if it helps even just a little for them to be careful. Figure any monkey on the wheel and tire task would realize that certain wheels you can beat on and then there's these that you handle really careful.

Ive yet to have a shop remove the adhesive backing when pulling the weights which for the record a little WD-40 and 10 minutes of soak time that adhesive comes right off.

I have a set of ARC-8's coming in for my ZLE, the tire shop that I use wont be used to put my new set together so I have to find a tire shop here in Louisiana that has the touchless machine, I sure as hell don't need these new wheels getting all boogered up, I even tell them as well as watch them and I find small marks on the inside of the barrel of the wheel.

Same thing happened to me recently. My tire had a stake in it so they fixed the tire but scratched and gouged by beautiful gloss back mrr wheel. I'm so tired of dealing with stuff like this so I'm going to ignore it for now and probably pay for it later.
