Planning to go to dragstrip July 8th..

This would be the first time I've ever gone to the strip:

Trying to do some pre-emptive maintenance before I go.

New spark plugs NGK Iridium IX
Having the (I believe it is the Trans filter changed)
And Z-26 brake pads put on (I needed new brake pads anyways)
Also having the intake cleaned as well (no catch can yet)

Is there anything else pressing I should also consider?

How many miles on your Camaro? Not sure why you'd need the trans serviced unless you're having issues. Are you planning on running drag radials or just your street tires?

48.8k

Street tires for now, figure I should get some experience under my belt before I dive into drag radials.

I am not expecting much given how inexperienced I am.

I will be content with low 12's, ecstatic for 11.8. Again I am basing those numbers on my inexperience although I know on paper the car should be able to do significantly better than that.

As long as your car is in good working order you should be fine to pass inspection. Is this a test and tune session or are you actually bracket racing? If just test and tune then go have fun, figure out what works best for you, and just familiarize yourself with how your car launches. Hopefully your first time out isn't bracket racing not having any previous numbers to dial yourself in with. I would check your track regs and find out about safety equipment. Some tracks require a helmet if running in the 12's and lower.

My Lt1 ran 11.78 (11.79@121 best mph). It made 431 rwhp on E85 and tune, I was running drag radials for those passes. If you really make 459 which sounds high for just E85 you won't be able to hook with stock tires. You'll have to have a helmet that's 2016 Snell approved. That's just about any track in the country.

Test n Tune session. And yes, I already picked up an SA2020 Helmet.

I am not just E85.

Headers, CAI, 3" x-pipe and tuned.

That was a sarcastic comment towards someone on here whom claims upgrades don't do anything.

I also have upgraded tires, not running stock tires. 305 rears. Per my 0-60 testing, yes its easy to break loose, but I've also figured out my launch RPM range to be optimal based on what temperature it is out side. All my 0-60 testing was done without burn outs nor warming up the tires. So far best time was 3.9 seconds on these street tires.

I'm hoping for 85 degree + weather that day. (which is when I hit my best 0-60)

1st time ever? My advise, drive the first few runs as if you were on the street, leave it in Drive, trac control on, get a feel for the track and driving with a helmet on. After a few runs then start playing with stuff.

Also don't listen to anyone who says leave on 2nd yellow or crap like that. Test n tune is all about ET, you can sit on the line for 10 seconds and get the same ET, timer doesn't start until car starts to move.

Good to know, I don't have to rush the launch.

I don't want to use Launch control, I don't trust it. So I'll be brake torque launching manually. Which is how I practiced my 0-60 runs.

I kind of figured out what a good launch is on my car, the problem is pedal consistency to do it.

If my car shifts before 60mph then I had a bad launch. If it shifts at or around 60mph then I had a good launch. The rest is me trying to figure out the pedal.

My ideal launch is getting from 0-40mph as fast as possible without spinning the tires, then I know I can floor it after that without breaking loose, even more so when its 85 degrees out on cold tires.

Good deal on the helmet. What rear tires are you running? Stock run flats?

305/30R20 Eagle F1 SC3

I've never done a burnout on them yet... so plenty of tread and meat to work with. I imagine that will change at the strip lol

The other week I tested launch control which failed btw, and I ended up ripping up asphalt and didn't even spin the tires for more than 1/2 a second. I had layered asphalt on my tires for about a week after before it finally came off. It looked like I ran over bubble gum at first lol, then I realized that it was asphalt

Will do, my mechanic wants to go with me that day he wants to record some video. By mechanic I mean, not the pro mechanic, but a certified mechanic whom is the only one I trust to work on my car outside of the pro shops.

Burnouts are pretty easy to do. You def don't want to use launch control, its ok on the street but will kill your track times since it pulls timing to keep you from spinning the tires. I do my burnouts in sport mode with all the traction controls turned off. Its best to just drive through the water to get the tires wet. Do your burnout just past the water. If you do it in the water it will get the wheel wells wet and then drip down on the tires when your ready to launch. I've done well over 400 burnouts at the drag strip between my 9 second 16 Maggie SS, my 10 second C7 Corvette and now my 2022 Lt1, probably a couple thousand plus since I've been drag racing for 54 years If your not going to do a burnout drive around the water. Hopefully the track prep is good cause you won't hook without doing a burnout.
