I didn't put any deposit down... but I frequently hear $500-1,000 deposit as standard.
I would recommend reaching out to other dealers. $5,000 is a lot of money for a deposit that is non-refundable.

$500-1000 is normal. I put $1000 down, non-refundable. $5000 is an obscene deposit amount for NO GUARANTEE it'll get picked up.

While many say it's "non-refundable", the truth of the matter is if it sits in 1100-status forever, you paid for nothing in the end, and they LOST nothing either since the order was never picked up. They might put up a bit of a fight initially to give your deposit back, but it'll be egg on their face and potential public negative image to really fight back if they don't.

That being said, if the order gets picked up and you change your mind, many dealerships will still give it back, but MIGHT make you wait until the car sells to someone else first...

My dealer (multi-year service relationship with them, but first vehicle purchase) asked for $500, fully refundable.

Other dealers I had talked to early on asked as much as $2k and some of those "said" it was non-refundable. I disagree with that since they would have no legal basis to keep the deposit if they can't deliver the vehicle.

I didn't have to put any deposit down for my order, I've bought a car at the dealer before, and nowadays they will sell it no problem if someone backs out. Plus my sales lady lives down the street from me.

Yeah I think you're going to have a bit more luck with that in Kentucky lol. A relationship w/ the salesperson helps a lot as well. I moved across the country a year ago so Im starting fresh, sadly.

I would contest the "non-refundable" part, especially if they can't provide you with the vehicle you seek. I suspect that they were trying to make sure that you were serious about buying the car. I was asked for a $1000 deposit, which I was ok with.

I'd set a stipulation in their contract that says the order is picked up by GM within a month or less, or you can get your refund back at any point. But $5K is an outrageous deposit no matter how you slice it.

Glad you found a better dealer. $5k non-refundable is obscene, but things are...different...in California. I've read a story recently of certain dealers wanting double sticker price for things like Civic Si's and 6 figures for Toyota Rav4's, in the San Fran area.

Agree with everyone. Norm is $00-$1000. Always get it in writing it needs to be refundable. If you have a great relationship with a dealer they might want nothing. That is what my dealer did for me on 3 purchases in 2021.

Things are different everywhere. Not just Cali.

Dealer here in PA had a Rapid Blue 1LE on their lot. Told me $7K over MSRP and absolutely no test drives. Not even their used cars. Oh, you want to order one? That'll be $7K over MSRP as well.

The very next dealer I visited was the exact opposite in every way and they got my $1K deposit.

Classic Chevrolet in Grapevine TEXAS which usually is the number 1 or number 2 volume chevy dealer in the country generally takes 1000 dollars and that is REFUNDABLE. I know that is a long way from you but that are LOTS of people that fly into DFW to pick their cars up.

Only time I've ever had to put down a deposit was when the car was already on the lot and I needed to secure it until I could take delivery.
