Seems like way too much time, effort, and money, to build something that already exists. I would be very surprised if you would even be in the same ballpark, let alone planet, in cost, versus just buying a SS. If you add in the suspension upgrades, brake upgrades, and all of the fabrication, this looks like a no win situation.

1. Sell your V6 Camaro
2. Buy an LT1 or SS Camaro 3. ??? 4. Profit

way easier to supercharge it imo.
still think it would be cheaper to sell and buy a v8 short term but insurance costs could make this a long term play. |

costs?
People are commenting here about the cost of the swap, and it is simpler to buy a V8 and they are correct. However, there are some other considerations. I have a 3LT -- so all the bells and whistles, but a V6. A comparable 2SS is a lot more money, and perhaps a guy likes the look of the LS/LT/LT1. Maybe this makes it worth it?

To go from a DI to a non DI engine is a huge deal.....

I thought the LT1 was also DI
oh.. ..just realized he meant LS and not LT. As for the OP... Listen when I say this.. I've swapped from a 3.8 V6 to a 5.7 LS V8 on a 4th Gen Camaro, and it costed WAY more than I thought it would. Just bare bones I put atleast $15k in that car in parts, labor, conversion accessories and it was still a mostly stock LS at the end of the day and it only ran for a few days before it blew an oil pump which completely obliterated my investment. I also swapped a 5.7 LS1 (old and tired 200k+ mile motor) to a 6.2L LS3 because I didn't want to get rid of the car, granted this motor has more mods, a cam, valve springs, pushrods, a stall and other goodies.. ..it wasn't cheap though.. ..probably $15 - 20kish wrapped up in parts and labor. With all the technology in the 6th Gens, I couldn't dream that it would be more affordable than the costs of replacing the car with an SS. Infact for the cost swap you can PROBABLY come pretty close to the pricing of ZL1 territory. Add onto the fact that for about a year or alittle more you're going to be chasing down grimelines that will Nickle and dime you to death, its unavoidable. Changing an engine to an engine that the vehicle was not originally designed around is a HUGE undertaking. DO NOT TRY IT. If you think you're going to save money by doing the swap , you're deceiving yourself. If its for uniqueness, well.. ..yes... it will be slightly unique, but the payoff vs cost won't be anything close to what you would have with an LT1 which out the box is plainly superior to the LS series motors. When I upgraded from my 3.6 V6 to my LT1 I didnt even play with the idea of swapping motors and trust me when I say I havent ever looked back. Just find one with the right options, color you like, you will NOT be disappointed that you went the route of replacing the car. Last edited by Need4Camaro; 08-31-2021 at 11:17 AM. |
