Those are the only two 5/40 Dexos I can find here in the US.

That's different from the ones you will find in most North American stores. If you live in Europe, you can find these and they are a viable alternative. As I mentioned, most of the Castrol Edge 0W-40 you find in North America are the A3/B4 variant and not Dexos 2 certified, if that matters to you.

Just make sure none of that oil makes it to the exhaust somehow if you still have cats. Zinc kills cats.

Hmmm Motul 5w40 Dexos2 is easy to find here, so surprised it would not be States side.
Valvoline seems back on the list, plus ACDelco has 2 of them, plus Amalie, etc.

The Royal Purple is Dexos 1, not certified as Dexos 2

there is a small 1 or 2 in the square symbol

The Motul 8100 X-clean 5W-40 is Dexos 2 certified. In Canada I am seeing a price of CAN$11 per litre, which is quite a bit cheaper than the Mobil 1 ESP 0W-40(~CAN$20 per litre). I will see if the local store that carries Motul products has any.

Curious if any Mobil 1 distributor can get the ESP 0W-40 for a better price if you buy bulk. I think one can just buy like 20+ bottles at a time and be good for 2 years or so. Oils don't go bad if you don't open them.

No 5w30 is certified as dexos2. Just dexos1 but must be full synthetic. Still the best choice for street cars imo. Heck, i tracked my modded c5z on 5w30 for over a decade with zero issues. Mind ya, a different motor. Anyway, 5w30 used to be a c7 and gen6 factory fill for years, so nothing wrong with it and much cheaper too. Just not authorized for track. Cheers!

I think they sometimes go on sale, but frankly there is ZERO advantage running 0w over 5w in summer. So i dont see a reason for spending so much more. GM doesn't even mention Mobil1 as a preferred oil, notwithstanding the latter's advertising efforts for their Formula 0w40. To the contrary, GM now only mentions ACDelco
Cheers!

Mobil 1 is the factory fill for the Camaro SS and Corvette engines, if that counts as a preference.

But I agree, in a mild climate, the difference between 5W-40 and 0W-40 is negligible, especially once you are up to operating temperature.

Sent from toaster or something

I know it is a factory fill. GM did a deal with Mobil and they supply all dealers with it now. Profit margins must be astronomical. And yes, there is zero difference between 0w and 5w unless somebody does a cold start in -20.
Heck, GM themselves permit a 15w oil in a ZLE lol! So for anybody using their car in summer only, paying extra for 0w which is an extreme winter rating is a complete and utter waste of money. I would even argue that 5w weight is a better choice for summer only driven cars, as it will provide for better protection at start up. Cheers!

Secondary cats already off and during the cam/heads build with headers the primaries will come off. I have an LNC 2014 and that will destroy the cats quicker then the zinc if I didn’t take them off. Put not really doing any two stepping much it’s on for the NOS.

The cam heads need the zinc and a thicker oil. This oil will be fine, I am definitely not going for the record of highest mileage when the majority of my miles will be 1/4 of mile at a time.

The Mobil1 ESP 0W40 dexos 2 is only like $8-9/Qt.

I don't follow you here. The issue with protection at startup is not about how thick the oil is, but how easily it flows and starts protecting after the engine is started. Since all oils are much thicker at cold start* than when at operating temps, thicker viscosity is the enemy! This isn't just in winter temps: it matters for a "cold" start on a warm day, too. For example, the kinematic viscosity of M1 ESP 0w40 is 69 mm2/s at 40C (104F), but only 12.9 at 100F. OTOH, M1's "Formula M" 5w40 has a viscosity of 79 mm2/s at 40C, meaning it will take 14% longer to reach critical parts on a cold start, even on the hottest summer day. It has almost the same viscosity when hot, though, at 13.2. Will that 14% extra viscosity mean your engine will blow up if you use 5w40? No. But it does mean you add more wear on every cold start compared to if you used 0w40, even on hot days.

The M1 15w50 has a 40C viscosity of 125! So it will take almost twice as long to reach all the moving parts on a cold start in the summer compared to 0w40. That's why GM says you can't use it for street driving. But is' 100C viscosity is 18 and its HTHS is 4.5 (vs 0w40 ESP's HTHS of 3.53), so it does provide better protection on track.

*"Cold start" meaning when the engine hasn't been warmed up yet, not meaning a cold ambient temperature.

That's EURO, which is not DEXOS.

You want the 0W-40 ESP Formula, which is DEXOS.
