Bump has been backronymed as 'Bring Up My Post', and I think I've heard that 'ttt' means 'to the top' but I bet that it was just easy to type and caught on quicker than 'fff' or 'jjj' or similar things in the early days of the internet.

People post those to bring their thread back to the top of the the list after its been inactive for a while. Most people don't go past the first page of threads in a subforum (some don't even scroll down that page very far), so the original poster of the thread will make a little post just to push (or 'bump') it back to the top.
