Cutting Exhaust Pipe

I was going to swap out my muffler and was wondering if it's possible to cut the exhaust pipe using a sawzall while the car is on the ground

Would have to borrow a sawzall but didn't want to bug my buddies unless it seemed like it was possible.

It looks like there may be enough room to get under there to do it but was curious if anyone has actually done it and if there were any tips to do it safely/right

Thanks and hope everyone is staying healthy

Get a tailpipe exhaust cutter from amazon its only like 10-20 bucks. Makes it very very easy to cut the exhaust pipes.

Yes the saw will work. The stock exhaust pipe metal is pretty soft

The tail pipe exhaust cutter will give you a nicer cut. However, if that doesnt bother you, fire up the Sawzall.

You'll be there for a bit with a handsaw but if you have the time/patience you'll get it done

It will work, but I would recommend an exhaust cutter like everyone is saying. When I installed my axleback, I kept it on the ground and used the sawzall and the cuts ended up being very angled/slanted due to the very limited room and had to be straightened out with an angle grinder.

Thanks for everyone's responses

Guess I'll have to debate on buying one for $30 (price of the pipe cutter with decent reviews) or just paying an exhaust shop to cut and do the swap for me. Seems like most people had gotten it down for around $100 for the labor....

I paid $150 for installing the catback with NPP. Fair price imo.

Just make sure you have the extended blade to cut all the way thru, some blades are to short and just makes it more difficult.

I stacked up some concrete pavers like a ramp to get the ass end up a lil higher.. I also got large hose clamps and put them on the exhaust pipe to help guide the sawzall blade and keep the cuts straight

Another vote for a tailpipe cutter. I rented one from O'Reilleys. While a sawzaw certainly works, I feel the cleaner, straighter cut of a tailpipe cutter is a better method.

Anyone use this tailpipe cutter from Amazon? Seems like it was hit or miss from the reviews cutting SS exhaust pipes

OEMTOOLS 27045 Tailpipe Cutter

I do like DVS510's suggestion of using hose clamps to help keep the cut straight... I have a blade that is long enough to cut all the way through the pipe (had to cut off the X-Pipe of the NPP muffler I bought ). How high did you lift it with the pavers?

It went through fine - except at the end the final cut it got stuck when the muffler shifted. Fortunately my son was out there to shift the weight so I could finish

You can go to Walmart and get a plug in saw for 20-25$ and then buy some long metal blades. I only needed one blade. I backed the car up on pieces of wood to get it higher. The cut wasn't perfect but it works fine. I smoothed it out with sandpaper and threw the borlas on with a little.bit of copper gasket stuff. I been meaning to go back and cut another inch or two so the pipes fit in nicer.
