Optimal ambient temperature for track days?

Hi Guys,

I am going to track my SS 1LE next week. The weather forecast says the temperature will be around 18C (64F). I find the tires sometimes can't hold the full power of the LT1 even if it's 68F outside. However if the weather it's hot, there's no problem.

Just curious if any of you tracked your car around 60+ degree F, and how does it feel?

I'm a noob and only been to the track once before, so I'll either not pushing the car to its limit or sliding out of the track onto the grass lol

Upper 40's to mid 50's and sunny are ideal conditions for lap times. Tires will warm up fairly quickly, and hold onto their optimal operating range longer due to the colder ambient temp. Remember, ambient temperature isnt' as important as track temperture for tires. Most tracks on a cold/sunny day are in the 70-80f track temp pretty quickly. The colder the better for engine power. FYI, Jim Mero's fastest lap time in the C7 Z06 @ VIR was in the upper 30's!

Thanks bro, probably when I was flooring it on the street the tires are not warm enough.

also once at the track let some air out of the back tires. I would say right around 20-25 pounds is the right spot once the air has been let out.

<edit>whoops, read track my car and assumed 1/4 mile runs</edit>

Ditto what Provost said. Car feels great at that temp once properly warmed up and you get a slight power benefit from the colder temps. My fastest lap I've been able to put in so far were high 60's/low 70s and overcast. You'll want to gradually warm the car up for the first 2-3 laps at a moderate pace (as is the case for the OEM tires in pretty much any dry ambient conditions anyways) and then the tires should be warm enough to push hard and start finding the limits.

Also, as a side note with respect to tire pressures, I've found that starting off at 28 PSI cold seems to be a good start then you might need to bleed off a little air to hit the 35-37 hot pressure that these tires seem to like. I assume you've gotten the track alignment already as well? If not, you might want to consider a slightly higher hot pressure to help keep the tire from rolling too much when cornering.

Thanks, I almost forgot the track alignment. Does the track alignment increase wear for normal street driving? Being said, I have an SUV for daily driving so I'll probably just keep the track alignment for my 1LE.

It shouldn't. Over long periods of time without track use you might notice more wear on the insides of the tires, but with semi-regular track use mine have stayed pretty even.
