Drag Tire for Rear - Question *Revised

Hey All,

Appreciate the feedback. Went with the 17x10’s (rear) Weld Racing - Belmont.
Was about to order the MT Street R but I’m hearing I should go with the MT Street R bias ply….because I have a manual, around 640whp. Do you agree? I planned on keeping the original wheels/tires up front. Will this cause the vehicle to feel more unstable down the track? Hope I’m making sense…

Original Ask——————————————————————————————————————
I’m looking for a set of rims / tires for when I go to the strip this summer. Nothing crazy expensive. I’m around 650 rwhp. At this point, I plan on going with the MT Street R’s…but I need help on the size….I know I must select the rims first.

Looking for a 17’’ rim that will not require any modifications to the 1LE. I see a lot of 17x10’s…which is narrower than the stock rim….is this an issue? Seems like that could look odd.

Tire size?
Current diameter in the front 26.7” - Michelin pilot sport 4s. Not changing the fronts. Just looking to do this a few times a year. Thanks in advance.

Would this rim require any modifications to the rear of the ZL1 1LE?
Also, would I be looking at a 305/45/17 tire for this rim?

passing along an observation from a car with 200 less whp.

the mt et street r tires (275/40/17) did not play well with the stock front wheels/tires on my car. squirmed like a bias ply/radial combo. i imagine your car would only do it more with stiffer suspension and more power.

At 650whp and a heavier ZL1 , your at the point where you might want to get a beadlock wheel since your probably gonna keeping raising the power .

I would not run a 26.7 inch tire on a boosted application like the diameter you have on the front. Stay around 28 inches and look at the 305 45 17 Street R on a 10.5 Race Star Wheel. I ran those and I was about 870 and went 9.41@147 with 1.35 60ft times. Some run that 26 inch tire on NA cars but I don't think you'll ever hook with a 26 inch since the A10. I made 100s of pass on the 28 tall tire and thats the way to go.

Ideally he needs a 27.5 in the front and a 28 in the rear. since he is not willing to change the front then he might as well just put a 305/30/20 555r2(27") on the rear and call it good enough. That tire has been 9.9's on a C7ZR1 with good track prep.

i would definitely not use a 26" rear tire on this car. minimum 27. i was simply bringing attention to the tire itself he was wanting to use. i can only assume his car will push worse than mine under acceleration of he tries to use a (really) soft sidewall rear tire with that gy sc3r front.

M6 SS Whipple here making around the same RWHP. Here is my setup, however I do have skinnies up front too. Been 10.70's at 132 on this setup.

Front
Wheels: Race Star 92's 17x4.50 5x120BC 1.75"BS GLOSS BLACK
Tires: M/T ET FRONT 27.5/4.0-17

Rear
Wheels: Race Star 92's 17x10.5 5x120BC 7" BS GLOSS BLACK
Tires: M/T ET STREET R BIAS 28x11.5-17

Tires have worked well. I dont really care for the Race Star wheels. Wish I would have just spent the money for better quality wheels, they are heavy for what they are and the lug nuts suck. Get yourself some extra lug nuts if you do go with the Race Stars. They work and they are probably your least expensive option.

Mickey Thompson ET Street R 305/45/17 (drag radials) on, say, a Weld or Forgestar lightweight (<20#) bead lock wheels

Always run the most sidewall you can. It will help it hook.

What tire pressure do you run? I previously suggested 18 psi, but for a 3800-4000# car, closer to 20 might work best. Need someone to video my tire to see what it does on the hit.
