Buying ZL1 out-of-state without the copper-free brakes?

Hi all,

I'm considering buying a ZL1 out of state.
Unfortunately most of the cars do not have the option:
PERFORMANCE COPPER-FREE BRAKE SYSTEM

Is it still possible to title the car in California?
If not, is there a way to retrofit the brake pads?

Did anyone go through that process already?

I would highly appreciate hearing about your experience!

Thanks guys!

EDIT:
Yes it is possible, see below..

If its new, no you wont be able to register it. Used then you should be fine. CA does not mess around and there are no loopholes you can find that will allow you to register a non CA car in CA. I wouldnt risk it.

Thanks for your answer.
Do you know for sure that you can't register it?
I mean one could still swap the pads and rotors to do a retrofit..

Yes 100%. Go watch the OC Motivator youtube videos where he was sold a hellcat from out of state that did not have the CA emissions line item in the build. The car was built and he took delivery and was unable to register it. Luckily the dealer made the mistake not putting the CA emissions line item in the build and they had to re-order him a new car and buy his current car back.

So I did a bit of research myself.

Copper-free brake regulations don't work the same way like the emission requirements do. All Camaros are 50 state compliant in regards to emissions.
Now for the brakes, in California, manufactures are not allowed to sell cars with copper-brakes anymore. But according to a GM bulletin, they can still be registered in Cali, if they where purchased out of state.

Quote:
Question : Are vehicles built after January 1, 2021 that
don’t meet the copper free regulation prohibited from
sale in California and Washington State?

Although General Motors will restrict dealers in CA &
Washington State from ordering Camaro models built
on/after January 1, 2021, there is nothing in place
preventing the registration of non-compliant models in
these states.
There is nothing in place to prevent a
dealer from dealer trading for a non-compliant vehicle
from a neighboring state and selling it to a customer.
The customer will not be aware of the non-compliance
issue, until they need to perform a brake service on the
vehicle and are unable to obtain parts. In such cases,
the customer should work with the selling dealer to
cover the cost of upgrading the vehicle to make it
compliant to the Copper Free legislation. In this
scenario, the responsibility to upgrade the vehicle
brake system to be compliant with the legislation, is not
the responsibility of General Motors.

I think I should be fine with getting such a car.
The financial headache will start when the pads or rotors are due for replacement. I think at that point, one will need to buy the copper-free rotors & pads all together (as the copper-free and usual brake systems have different sized rotors & pads. This would still be okay, as long as the calipers are still fitting..)

The inspectors will be looking for the correct certifications for this car and they will deny you if you dont have them. They are not going to fudge on this. You've been warned.

Here is a thread on the topic. It is more than just the brake pads. It sounds like you could have the dealer install the option to be compliant. You’ll want to discuss it with the selling dealer.

California does not do inspections. Only smog. This is from the CA DMV, no inspections mentioned.

Hello guys,

I did purchase a 2022 from out of state, although I did make sure it had all the proper CARB certification stickers and have the copper-free brakes, as I was most definitely not willing to risk anything.

For what it's worth, when I passed by the DMV for the visual inspection, they checked under the hood for the CARB sticker, but I don't believe the DMV employee looked for the copper-free option, nor did he visually inspect the brakes.

Of course that doesn't 100% mean that option is never checked by DMV, but in my case it seems they didn't check, or didn't know to check

I don't know if you saw my post, but I might have a line on a Manual ZL1. Orange, I think it was just no/very little options. Let me know if you'd like to find out more about it. I'm not sure if it's sold or not since I posted the thread a week ago. MSRP

California most definitely does inspect out of state the cars at the DMV before you can register it, I just had it done this week.
