Considering buying 2018 Zl1 w/ less than 5k miles no warranty for $60k

No powertrain warranty left. Is this a good idea/deal or could be risky? Thanks

If the car is stock, that’s probably a fair price from what I’ve seen of the current market.

Oil pump failure would be my biggest concern without a powertrain warranty. The 2017/2018 models built in 2017 have reported the most failures. The rest of the engine is pretty damn stout.

Risky? Depends on your financial situation. I believe there is a decent risk of having to pay for parts down the road. If it wasn’t for my extended warranty I probably would of had to part ways with my cars when the trans went out 3k miles later. My case is a little out of the ordinary as I’ve only talked to a handful of members who have had similar trans problems. If you are not worried about a warranty, go for it… you’re paying 5k less than I did and with 8k less miles, market is definitely turning to buyer again

Thanks guys yeah a couple of real great reasons to have a warranty. Oil pump and tranny. I guess could have a katech put on it asap. My girl says to get a new one for the warranty and the newer taillights, video rear view mirror, etc Etc. I want to to save the $13k or so. We’ll see.

For a stock car, there have been maybe 1 or 2 people on this board that have had issues with their ZL1 transmission. This has been from a stock car I'm fairly certain too. Taylor was the most recent one that i can recall having issues on a stock car, that he bought used.

I have had 0 issues with my stock, 2018 A10 to include the trans and oil pump that I bought new in 2018 and now has about 34k miles with auto X and road course events through out the years. Yes, A10 has a weird 3 to 4 and 4 to 3 shift from just cruising around but all A10's seem to have this. Some people notice it, some people don't. At WOT, you don't notice it.

Only things I've replaced have been tires, oil, oil filter, diff fluid and trans fluid/filter/gasket. I've added a supercharger coolant reservoir the help get air out of the system since it doesn't come with one from the factory.

How many times have I used my warranty even after extending it for another 4 years? 0.

This car isn't comparable to the M5 V10 I see in your signature as that was known to be a ticking time bomb all around. This is a solid platform, even when you start to tune it.

Go with the new , 13 to 15 k can add up quick , if things go south. And the benefits of new , a list of them .

fwiw, I hate the rear view mirror camera. I've never gotten used to it.

However, at the end of the day, you're still buying a 5/6 year old car - things are going to need fixing. Factor those into the cost vs buying one brand new right now. I've seen zl1s selling at msrp - you just have to be willing to look around. I only paid 3k ADM on mine and I bought during the middle of all the pandemic fallout/craziness when dealers wanted 5-10k over on any they happened to have in stock.

If you’re comfortable with getting an expensive car out of warranty, I would get it BUT I would try to knock down a couple grand from the price. Personally I wouldn’t pay 60k for a 5 year old zl1 that originally had an msrp of 66k regardless of the market. As the poster above said it is getting closer to a buyers market and it’s about to be February which is not prime zl1 buying weather.

Still too high. I paid $67k for my 2021 brand new. $53-55k is a more realistic but I would still try to get a 2019 or newer. I see a lot of ZL1 popping up in my area now that inflation has taken hold. There used to be only 3-5 available in a 50 mile radius, now there are 19.

$60K is too much, especially given the year / out of warranty thing. If you can get it for $53K, then put in a Katech oil pump for $3K, you will have a solid car that will not let you down.

I still have that weird 3rd to 4th shift on a fully built trans. Only notice it when light on the go pedal.

I'd think you could get it for 58 or 59, it's in range for the market right now. I would have no problem buying it, but it depends on what you're looking for. If you don't maintain/fix your own stuff, maybe you want the comfort of a warranty. If you plan to mod the car, then that warranty doesn't matter anyway.

Then there are the preferences. I got a 2017 instead of a new '22 earlier this year because I saved a chunk of money over new, didn't have to wait months, and I wanted the 17-18 tail lights and the integrated homelink transmitter. (silly for some, but important to me). Plus, I'm going to pull it apart and build the heck out of it over the next 5 years, so warranty for me didn't matter.

So for my situation, a low mile 17 or 18 is what I was intentionally looking for, over a new one. And at the time, it was only a 10k difference. Felt stupid paying 60 for a 5 year old car, but my car brings me such joy, and my old one was totaled out. Pay to play. Crap market timing, but I didn't want to wait. At least the prices have come down a little bit almost a year later.

Pass on it is my advice to you as it’s overpriced anyway.

I’ve had another user private message me about having identical trans issues more recently than me, but as you are saying I believe the trans issues are fairly uncommon, however with it being the same trans that ford has a class action on, that you can JOIN if you have a GM affected vehicle.. I’m not gonna try to tell you this thing is bulletproof, it’s not. Fantastic, yes! Stout, yes! 99% no issues?? I would find it very hard to believe the 10-speed has held up that well across the entirety of both Ford and GM lineups. I’d give it something more like a 95%. Just because people aren’t talking about it on this forum doesn’t mean it isn’t happening. Maybe you were hinting at the fact that the reason I had issues was because I bought used, and that’s a fair point. But it’s also why I have an extended until 2028 or 124k miles

Also worth adding that I used my warranty TWICE within the first 6 months. For the same issue, because when they gave it back to me the first time after 20 days, it wasn’t fixed. Always taking a gamble with modern GM folks
