2020 Navigation map update

Got an email from Chevrolet today with a notification that the 2020 map is now available and on sale. Regular price is $159, sale price is $99, if ordered before the end of the year. The compatibility list says it's good for 2016-2018 Camaro.

I got the email as well. It would be good to know what exactly got updated, but I can't find any "release notes" or change list.

Was wondering when the next map update was coming out. I need to update 2 vehicles. It’s usually October or November for the release.

Yeah they never list what had been added. Supposedly you can contact them and list some roads and they can verify. But no changelog.

If you use Android Auto or Apple CarPlay then this update is not needed unless you want to use the onboard nav. My truck doesn’t have that option so will be updating it. Debating on the Camaro.

Sucks about the change log, yeah.

The thing is I freakin' love the HUD and DIC integration of the factory nav and speed limits, it's so very helpful when navigating unknown areas or tricky highway junctions that I'm still willing to forgive the lower quality graphics and other shortcomings compared to AA. Plus I despise plugging USB cables in an out and dealing with messy cables in the car in general. My dash cam and radar detector are hardwired properly, no wires apart from the few inches between the units and the headliner.

But then $160 or even $99 every year for just a couple of new street names or lane assignments, well that doesn't look like a great offer, to be honest.

I gotcha. Makes sense. My truck is a 2014 running the 2015 update. My Camaro is a 2017 running the 2016 update (EARLY 2017 build made in 2016).

The "roads" get updated... lol. Nee construction, nee roads, etc that are built are added so when you go down a new road it doesnt show you are offroad.

99 pretty cheap. BMW charges 695 per YR when I had my beamer.

Points of interest are updated too - new restaurants, gas stations, etc.

Funny thing about the Points of Interest in regard to Auto Dealerships. I was searching for a Mini dealer last weekend, but only GM dealerships were displayed in the POIs search. I had to find the Mini dealership by typing the name.

And yes, I agree $99 is pretty cheap. My son-in-law's Lexus GS350 is $350 to update, and I was quoted $500 for my M235i. But in my opinion, it should be a free update at least as long as the car is still in the warranty period.

All depends on your perspective. If you use Apple Car Play or Android Auto, anything more than free isn't cheap. They both do an amazing job of real time updates and there is no cost to it.

You're absolutely correct. I should have said "cheap compared to other car manufacturers." I thought I implied that by saying how much Lexus and BMW charges, but you got me. And note that I did say my own opinion was that the map update should be free...

Heads up to prospective first time buyers, the update process takes about 50 minutes. I'm not looking forward to another almost one hour long idling "session", but my fear is accessory mode will turn off after 10 mins even with the battery on a tender, potentially bricking the nav module...

Waze and google maps are way better and update automatically for free. Use CarPlay or android auto.

You should not use Accessory Mode - that will likely turn off. The update instructions explicitly say:

DO NOT attempt to install this update in "Accessory Power Mode."

I'm with you on not wanting to run the idling engine for 50 minutes, even though the update instructions recommend that. It's a waste of gas and not sure it's great for the engine either.

So the update I did last year, I used the "Service Mode" instead, with a battery tender connected to the power terminals under the hood, just in case. Service Mode is described in the owner's manual - press and hold the engine start/stop button for more than 5 seconds without pressing the brake or clutch. Service Mode does not turn off until you turn it off.

Thanks for the tip, wjones14, that's how I'll do it come March/April 2020
