Got to love a ZL1, when they're real.
I was driving home yesterday with my wife and middle son in his Mustang. We were headed south on I75 between Chattanooga and Atlanta. As we were closing on a Camaro which was in the far right lane, my son commented, 'it's a ZL1, first time I've seen one.'
Except...standard SS type spoiler, chrome rims running some pretty skinny tires, definitely not forged rims and big fatties out back. No hood scoop(s). Not Brembos on the rear wheels. Kind of a strange looking front end with vertical running lights. Clearly this poor guy bought a ZL1, then replaced the front end, the hood, the tires, the wheels, the spoiler and the brakes with non ZL1 options. Now why would he do that? Or...... surely nobody would buy a non V8 Camaro, slap a ZL1 badge on it and think nobody would notice? Really made me wish I was in my Camaro instead of my son's Mustang. |

People used to do that to their 5th gen Camaros. It didn’t make sense to me but it was their car to do what they wanted. I remember one time I was at a local car show and someone asked me if I was going to buy ZL1 body parts to make my 2010 2SS look like a ZL1 and I said hell no. I would never clone my Camaro to look like something it’s not. Too bad a real ZL1 didn’t come up beside him and dust his ass good!

I just think it's somebody with an empty credit card. Or maybe he bought the ZL1 stickers to run on a basic Camaro.

I’ve had people ask me if mine is a ZL1, even with the SS emblems, so I guess some/many would be fooled.

Maybe he knows nothing about Camaros and bought it used and the guy selling it was selling it as a ZL1?

I guess I shouldn’t laugh. My own father put Ferrari badges on his early 90s MR2. I guarantee that’s not fooling anyone.

Even though my car has much more power than a stock ZL1, I won't even think of pretending it is one. I'm not ashamed to drive a modded SS.

Nothing new to see here. About twice as many 69 Z28's on the street than Chevy ever built. Same with 70 SS Chevelles, especially LS 6.

I bought two 69 Camaros with Z28 emblems. I wouldn't have put them on there but I didn't take them off either. They ran good enough to wear them.

Its also pretty common to see a ZL1 1LE front bumper on a 6th gen. Fairly common "upgrade".

Sure you can ‘customize’ (lol) your ride by sticking a ZL1 badge on it. I can then laugh at you when I see your ‘customized’ ride. |
