I have 1600 miles, 2nd oil change and diff service.. track alignment and brake fluid before Barber... I race a pro Formula Atlantic and got the ZL1 to learn new tracks and stay sharp between races..

Warranty implications ?
You can use other non-Mobil 1 full synthetic 0w40 or 5w40 oils as long as they are Dexos 2 and the warranty is safe. I use Valvoline 5w40 and Motul 5w40, and prefer these to Mobil 1 0w40 base on price and the heavier viscosity of 5w40 vs 0w40. The M1 0w40 ESP is way too expensive.

Dexos 2 spec is the key to the warranty, not Mobil 1.

OP i was reading some posts from a GM employee on facebook and he mentioned if you did need a long block replacement from track use on a ZLE, the first thing they’d check is if ya had the 15w50 in there. Said it was because of the lateral grip of the super car 3R.

While i switched to the Michelin MP4S for mostly street use and occasional track, I’m not going to give GM that easy of a win In the event something does happen...so I go ahead and put the 15w50 in for track days

Yeah I know Repman! You’re only old as you feel but in all seriousness, I can’t afford to do track events with my ZL1 as I don’t have the extra money and I still owe about 3 years on the car. I bought it used back in early March and I’m just not interested in doing any track events at this time! I would rather spectate at racing events which is what I do at NASCAR races and drag racing!

jvandy, your reply is what I had reference to when I suggested that Bill used the recommended grade of oil that GM says to use doing competition/track events. People on this forum have posts about this very issue and it’s best not to take a chance with your car.

I run Mobil 1 Racing 0W-50 at the track. If you are concerned about start-up wear then this is a good solution for you. It is recommended by Chevrolet Performance for track use along with the ESP 0W-40 and the 15W-50. The ZL1 1LE however has the requirement of 50 weight oil for track use.

OP, listen to JVandy. I'm in my Camaro because I modded my Red Sport, and voided the warranty. They WILL look for anything to void the warranty, then good luck trying to get them to fix it. It's impossible. Use 15w50.

Mobil 1 15W50 is actually required for ZLE and ZR1 on track due to previously mentioned R spec tires and high G-Forces.

I've leave 0W40 ESP in mine simply because I know that the top class drivers in a regular ZL1 are going to pull more G's than I am. Hard to justify 2 oil changes for a track day.

Hey Repman, I'm definitely down for a couple of track days at Road Atlanta in the new year! I see you're in Kennesaw, I'm just up the road in Jasper. We should hook up for a Suches/Dragon run sometime. Greg, you can join us too - no excuses accepted!

You can run 5-30 at a track and nothing is going to happen, if you blow up, it's cause you're stupid. GM does recommend 0-40 for track use, I'd go with that,

If warranty is a concern, use 15W-50 for track duty on a ZL1 1LE. It is also very cheap. Non-1LE ZL1s do not have this requirements and are OK with 0W-40.

For road duty, there are many Dexos 2 oils available; however, for very cold climate the M1 0W-40 is the right stuff.

exactly, it wasn't the typical $105 oil change. not worth the risk for the cheaper price of the 15w50
