2017 2SS Fifty....in the Shop at 400 Miles-Auto Torque Converter Lock/Unlocking!?

Evening All!

Just posted my new member intro here: http://www.camaro6.com/forums/showthread.php?t=482811 and now over here to share the real story and ask for help to keep this under control!

Got the car a couple of weeks ago now. 2SS with 8 speed auto. Been on break-in and sissing it around and loving the old school feel with more power and technology. However.....after getting used to the shifting, I knew there was something wrong.

Problems:
  • After sitting all night, slow to go into gear. Not toooo slow, but slower than it should be - and when it does, it is a double hit, like it goes into gear twice. Afterwards, and up to temp, all fine.
  • MAIN GRIPE = at cruising speed on freeway or secondary road, under light throttle, notice the tach CONSTANTLY varying ~100 RPM, like the torque converter is locking and unlocking. Not right at all. Some describe this as the "shudder" not really a shudder on mine, as low throttle I guess.
  • During regular around town driving, the shifts are not consistent....i.e. 1-2 is soft, 2-3 firm, remainder as expected.
  • During spirited (but still on break-in) driving, under load and climbing hills, leaving corners, etc - seems to be not sure whether it is in a solid gear or not and hunting for the next.
SO, here is what happened so far - 400 miles, called dealer and took it in with gripe written down. THey drove and agreed it is doing it. Came back 2 days later with .....we have never seen this before (huge dealer BTW) and contacted GM etc. We did the TCM re-flash and drove a twin to your car....yours is better now, but the others are doing it way worse.

I agreed to come put more miles on it to test. Was better but still doing it, just less RPM variation. Kept it for 2 weeks and now it is at 950 miles. Same story and called dealer - told them I was bringing it back and let me know when to drop off, so they have the right amount of time to research. They too a week, so I drop it off 2/6 for round 2!

Please advise (I know there are a few) specific TSBs etc that they should reference - this seems like a torque converter to me, but I don't want this thing molested completely.....if a flush etc and another reset will fix, I am for it. If not, it needs the converter.

Help!

Thanks!

Desert dual sport,
So sorry to hear about your situation ! Not sure if this helps but you sound correct. There are numerous issues in this forum concerning the 8 speed automatic transmissions in the Camaro SS. A lot of them have to do with the torque converter and the (AFM) Active Fuel Management system not working together too well. I guess long story short it is under warranty. Again that really sucks, but be positive and stay on top of it. I'm sure your situation will be taken care of.

Take a look at the transmission section, there a lot of posts there of the 8 speed auto vibration issue. I felt the issue for the first time today and it freaked out my passenger and I. It felt like I was running over rumble strips or had a tire going down. I have had this car 2 weeks and have about 800 miles on my 2017 1SS (8/2016 production date). It has also slipped pretty bad a couple of times going from 1st to 2nd when the tranny is below operating temp.

It sounds like there is a TSB for this issue and involves a fluid flush, filter replacement, and TCM reprogramming. In certain cases, the torque converter also gets replaced. I will be bringing my car to the dealer this week and will post any updates. Please let us know if you have any updates on your car as well.

I had the issue in my 2017 SS Fifty that showed up around 1200 miles. Dealer did a triple flush and TCM update and advised to drive it 200-300 miles to see if it clears up. The rumble feeling went away immediately. The gear slip/hunt (very mild but noticeable) went away within a 150 miles of getting it back from dealer.

So far I've put 1000 more miles on the car without any transmission issues. I will say there was a noticeable difference in the AFM functionality and the gear shifts based on throttle input with the TCM update. I noticed right away that it was behaving different. Not in a bad way, but just different. So far so good.

Wow, last night (it doesn't go in until today.....) we were heading to a friend's house to watch some of the game. Car had gotten progressively worse. These people lived up on top of a very steep hill. You guessed it - low speed, steep hill, car was hunting for right gear and shuddered/skipped so bad that the wife thought someone hit us!
Will post updates, it goes in this AM....
Mega - glad to hear yours shifts completely different after the flush and update - the first time, they had just did the update and no flush. I wrote up a tech notes page for the techs and described everything and referenced what I learned from here, so this better go well!

Thanks

Dropped it off today and they gave us a loaner. Looks like they test drove it twice for about ten miles each time. Will see what they have to report tomorrow - hopefully they got the data recorded and sent off already.

So I too have dropped my car off and received a loaner. I want to start by saying that the service team at Day's Chevrolet in Acworth GA is awesome, they have always taken care of me and all of my vehicles. I Spoke with the transmission specialist and judging by what he felt during the test ride, they will do the fluid flush, transmission filter, and TCM reprogramming. If the issue continues, then they will replace the torque converter.

On top of that, I am also having My Link issues so that will be addressed with a software update. The selling dealer also drilled my license plate holes incorrectly (about an inch too wide on either side of the plate, didn't bother using the dimples molded into the bumper from the factory). They will be plastic welding the holes in my bumper and repainting it, even though I would have liked a new bumper.

Three weeks and 875 miles into my third Camaro and I'm pretty aggravated with the whole situation. My last Camaro spent over 2 weeks in the shop due to multiple fit an finish issues and the Camaro before that spent almost a month in the shop due to a mix of electric issues, fit and finish, and a failed engine. I love these cars, they are amazingly capable machines but these issues continuing to pop up are really starting to put a sour taste in my mouth...

Anyone considering a Camaro should be in this forum doing their research. There are serious quality control issues that are far from isolated. If one did not and just bought one, risky move.
If you read about all the issues and still bought one, good luck.

I'm having numerous problems as well. Current one is "service brake assist" warning and Dealer cannot fix without a new program from GM. Program is not available!!!!! Serious issues with my Camaro so buyers beware.

Update: Car has been there a week (we had bad/blizzard weather) and they called yesterday - ordered trans filter, which will be in on Monday. Triple flush next step - they are on the right track.

Got a call from my dealer yesterday, they are replacing the torque converter.

Dropped it off on Thursday, the car will be down till at least Monday or Tuesday for the transmission. It will likely be at the dealer beyond completion of the transmission repair due to the issues with the My Link and bumper snafu. Calling GM tomorrow to let them know about what is going on and my frustration with the situation.

Thank you desertdualsport for starting this thread and putting this info out there for the rest of us Camaro owners. It really helped when trying to describe the issue to my dealer and articulate what was going on so they didn't come back with the dreaded "unable to duplicate" response.

So, they did the triple flush and filter and I picked up the car this afternoon. It is better, however, I haven't been on the freeway yet and can't tell - it seems to lug in a higher gear longer, which is what is expected. I did notice some minimal jumping, but could have been attributed to lugging and sassing it around. Will get it on the road when I leave tonight and will either take it home or drop it back off once I see how it acts on the freeway!
