I'm talking about you, Ford
I've driven many cars from many different manufacturers (GM, Ford, VW, Jeep, Mazda, and others), and I have yet to find a single car that I didn't get better than advertised mileage in. I've admittedly never driven a hybrid long enough to test, but interestingly, the VW TDI's I've driven have exceeded their advertised mileage the most of any of them.

I think your experience is less about inflated manufacturer claims, and more were you live, and in particular, the crap that they call "gas" in your location. I can guarantee that no manufacturer tests for fuel economy on the California blend, or even one with any ethanol at all in it...and for good reason. Most cars do get their advertised gas mileage. They just need to be running on gas to do it.

Your comment is interesting, because its looking like TDI owners will soon be getting the diesel version of your experience. Like those stuck with the "clean" California gas blend, VW TDI owners once their cars are "fixed" will probably be filling up more often.

I do follow and was interested in seeing another power unit from them and if it was capable of competing. Guess it's back to waiting on Honda and Renault to get their shit together at some point.

Bosch is now confirming they supplied the software to Volkswagen but with a written warning that it was illegal to install in saleable cars.

As an engineer that has worked for five companies (including Bosch), I can't imagine being that blatant and on that large of a scale. Arrogance

Looks like it started in 2005, these articles seem incomplete and discuss mysterious "leaked documents"

So, VW has done something we all basically do....As long as the car passes emissions tests, who really cares the rest of the time....I want performance and mods (illegal or otherwise)....and will change back if needed for the smog test...

BTW, numerous threads and discussions of illegal modding are abundant here on C5...modify that exhaust, remove those cats, change that intake, by-pass that skip-shift, get a tune and cam, etc....

Just saying, before you throw VW under the bus and claim some righteous high-ground, take a look in the mirror....(or look at one of the several forums and sponsors here)....Same basic thing is happening...

Sort of like aftermarket parts that say "Off-Road Use Only" for our cars here....

Agree ethically, although not remotely the same scenario given the sheer volume of numbers. A few gear heads performing some aftermarket tuning vs. 100% of all vehicle types (11 Million and climbing) over the last 8 years explicitly engineered to bypass emission standards all over the planet.

The difference is that as a manufacturer, VW is required to produce a legal car. Whatever you do after you buy it is your business.

To put it in perspective it would be like one of us selling our cars as a "100 percent stock camaro with absolutely no mods" even thou we have dumped hundreds even thousands of dollars into it. The issue isn't what they did, the issue is lying about it to millions of people.
