SS 1LE Alignment question

Greetings all.

Weird question for you.

I have a '17 SS 1LE. Owned since new. I track and AutoX frequently.

After a 2-day Sebring followed by a 3-day Daytona, I had developed a pull to the right, so I took it in for an alignment.

When I went to pick it up, they informed me they had charged me for 2 bolts. I figured they were the TTY bolts.

Nope. They put two new bolts in the front strut tower. That screw hole has been empty since delivery and I have the car aligned 3-4 times per year.

Has something changed in the guidance in aligning the 1LE and ZL1?

Those are used to fine tune the camber. Once the two lower strut bolts are loosened, that bolt pushes against the strut. Tighten the bolt to reduce the negative camber, loosen it to increase the negative camber. Typically those adjuster bolts are to be removed after the lower strut mounting bolts are tightened. The Gen5 Camaro uses the same method for camber adjustment. It’s a 10mm x 1.5 bolt. I do leave my adjuster bolts in the knuckle on my Gen5, but I used some thread locker to keep it there.

The upper strut mounting hole is slotted so the strut can move closer or further from the knuckle, essentially pivoting off the lower bolt.

If the bolt is backed out enough, you’ll run out of additional negative camber as the knuckle fully contacts the strut.

Thanks for the reply. I know what they are for. But I have never seen them on ANY 6th Gen. if I look up the part#, it’s not listed for a Camaro, but an Equinox.

Also of note, I have been running since Day 1 (November 2016) without that bolt.

It is in the Chevy manual to assist in aligning the car...don't have to have them, don't have to leave them in after the alignment is done. No car comes with them...

Ultimately, they probably gave you a better alignment using them than not.

Only additional thing I'd recommend is to double check that they preloaded it with some torque. They're technically supposed to be removed (since the strut bolts hold everything in place once they're tightened after the alignment) so you don't have the risk of it falling out and getting into the rotor and/or caliper, but if there's some preload torque on them they shouldn't be as at risk of falling out.
