Yep. I have always heard that Mazda’s have the thinnest paint of any manufacturer. No personal experience with them but this is what I have read and heard

I was told by my detailer/PPF installer that the paint hardness on the GM cars he does varies a lot from car to car. Some are hard and some are soft. Not even color specific although he said black cars were typically softer in general it wasn't always one way or the other with any color. He said the paint on mine was on the soft side of average and very thin for whatever that's worth.

Curious as to what measurements he got with his paint thickness gauge?
All the Gen 6 Camaro's I've measured are on the heavy side...... 180-200 microns. Average paint jobs tend to be around 110-130 microns, and thin runs 70-90 microns.

The base coat color shouldn't have anything to do with the hardness of the factory paint.
All the cars are painted, and go through the oven to have the paint baked on regardless of color.
The difference would be how much hardener is used in the clear coat, not the color of the base coat.

Yes sir!! on my 2013 Zl1 in certain spots trying to remove some deep scratches. That's when I bought a paint thickness gauge, LOL.

He didn't say and at the time I didn't think to ask

But it's good to know that our cars run thicker than average, thanks!

I use a gauge similar to this one. I got it on Ebay for around $110. It has a variance of +/- 3%. Be sure to get the one that reads ferrous and non-ferrous surfaces should you decide on one.

In the video he uses Mils, but I prefer Microns as it's a much smaller measurement, and modern paint is thin compared to the 20 year old car in the video.
