Clutch alignment tool. Metric or SAE?
I have to put a clutch in my 2020 Camaro. It only has 7k, but an unscrupulous "master mechanic" , who was later fired for Grand Larceny, was the mechanic assigned to my car at my former shop. I later found he was a Fugitive and master con artist. I ran a $1.00 background check. 33 convictions. 11 of which were felonies. Currently a fugitive in VA and NY. Told Snap - On where his tools were.
All I need to know is if I need the metric or SAE clutch alignment tool. One has 10, 20, 30 type of adapters The other has .500 .600 .509 .705, etc Which tool do I send to the new shop? They are having a hard time getting the clutch. I have made it clear that the parts are available. The mechanic wants to use his so he can make money. I am going to ship the clutch, pressure plate, throw out bearing and the alignment tool from RockAuto so it is there ready to install. I want my car home. I am tired of the games. Car is ready except the clutch. This shop is highly sought after. I only follow up with the shop when they say "X part will be here this week and the car should be ready X day for pickup. When X day goes by AND I DONT GET A CALL. Then I call with a cheerful message. Without all the bulls**t of being nice, I am basically saying: X day had come and gone. Where is my car? Is it ready for pickup? Why not? What is the new plan? WTF is your major malfunction private Pyle? Sorry guys. My patience is gone. There were 4 items on the list to repair. 1. Verify correct Supercharger installation and tune 2. Install new clutch that mechanic burned out on purpose 3. Reinstall splitter 4. Install lower seat cushion (cut by former mechanic). They said the car would be done in a week. The only thing left is the clutch. We decided that OEM was only option. The clutch is available through GM and Rock Auto. Why is my mechanic dragging his feet on the clutch???? -CamroChris! |

This is verbatim from the repair manual:
"Use a commercially available universal clutch alignment tool to align the clutch driven plate to the center of the engine crankshaft." Nothing mentioned about size. I have replaced two clutches in my life, and both times used a tapered alignment tool, so that did not seem to be specific to metric vs SAE. Every spec in the repair manual lists data in metric first. And I have used metric tools on the car. So I would guess metric given a choice. |

If you have to buy a tool and parts for a shop to work on your car, you need to find a new shop. A good shop will have the tools and capability to find the proper parts for any job. I have never had to order anything for my car in a shop.

Here's the pilot bearing:
https://www.partsgeek.com/gbproducts...-05409715.html The tool to seat it: https://www.ebay.com/itm/230888192184 here's what it looks like in the repair manual: https://www.repairprocedures.com/ser...3_2360143.html The other bit they are showing is this pricey puller: https://www.ebay.com/p/658767532 I can't find the ID of the bearing, and that is probably what you are looking for to buy the alignment tool. |
