Best paint protection for road racing?
After a 1/2 mile event and then 3 sessions at the road course the paint on the lower front grill and along the lower sides has taken a beating.
In my 1/2 horse town there is only 1 guy that does ceramic covering and he's saying I need the car repainted before he'll do the coating at $650. I have no expereince with the ceramic coat, nor having a black car road racing where the chips show up so bad. Any other suggestions? |

I always use this stuff for track days or canyon runs - https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01M5LEEB0...ing=UTF8&psc=1

PPF. It’s expensive but it’s great for protection. My car is black and has no chips or swirls or scratches in roughly 10000 miles. I highly recommend the stuff. I wish I had have done vehicles I owned previous to my ZLE.

He may not have applied it properly, who knows, but I wasn't impressed. IMHO, it's a Camaro, not a Ferrari. Just drive it. In a year or so, repaint the nose and PPF it if you're so inclined. |

Scottyz if you don't mind me asking, what did the PPF run you for the whole car?

+1 Tracwrap, but never forget the three rules of racing:
1. Racing. 2. Breaks. 3. Stuff*. *Including paint. |

PPF of the bumper is the way to go - cheap enough (can be as low as $350) and will take care of the issue for you. The brand of the film doesn't really matter for what u need it for....

Yea, I went naked last time at Daytona. Tried blue tape, worked great, but time. Tried the roll on, got sick of peeling the sunburned skin off, track wrap looks like my Xmas presents, not good. Just saying to myself, it's a track car and chicks dig scars (wife was good with)! Now, I just enjoy it for me, not who might buy it down the road...

Ceramic won’t protect from chips. You need PPF (Xpel, etc) for that. Trouble is that defects in paint will show through (and get amplified). It is not cheap, and it is very labor intensive if you plan on doing it yourself. But it is unbeatable for what you’re asking.
Honestly tho, to PPF your whole car is probably in same price range as just getting it repainted.

I'm not one who typically worries about the looks of the car per se. I'm usually interested in more go then show, but the front lower section has been brutalized something terrible so needing to do something before the next track day after thanksgiving.
Thanks! |

I had SMARTFILM in NE Mesa put a clear bra on my Z/28 last year. I treat my Z better than I treat most of my family members but I've heard this is the hot set-up for track cars. In your situation the toothpaste may already be out of the tube if you've already got some track patina. Wouldn't hurt to inquire. And if you need help driving your ride through Salt River Canyon US 60 I'll volunteer my services. You know, in case you're too busy or something. LOL!!!

Last journey through the canyon before a track day I had a 5th gen pass me and we had a good time all the way to globe where we gassed up and swapped stories.
It was a great warm up for new pads and tires the next day at the track! |
