Whining noise at 3.5-4k RPM *found problem*

The other day I was driving the car hard for a bit, and the car developed this weird whining noise at 3.5 to 4k RPM. There was also a notable amount of heat coming up from the shifter/transmission area. I have heard the whine before, but it was never as bad as this, and it hasn't done it since then. I have an appointment at the dealer next tuesday, but I'm just wondering if anyone has any ideas what this could be before I go in. Thanks.

Hello again mikeyg36,

Be sure to let me know the progress on Tuesday's visit. I will also contact the dealership for further information on your issue.

Noise is probably coming from the rear end!
