Wow, I know the owner of the car that is faster than the Space Shuttle!

Pretty cool record and congrats to him, he has a lot of $$$ invested (even more with 2 motors)

http://jalopnik.com/5818085/this-wor...-space-shuttle

Living in Florida has its privileges and I have to say I am pretty lucky that I know and party with the guy that owns this insane Ford GT. I have been around this car for a few years and the car draws a crowd..

In fact, ~17,500mph (orbital velocity) > 4,000mph > 267mph. That GT is awfully fast, but saying it's as fast as the shuttle and not pointing out that that's just the speed it's going down just before touchdown, and friction, and brakes, and drag chutes, is pretty funny.

I think at launch the shuttle goes 0-60 in about 2 seconds, as well - faster than a Bugatti, and that's going straight up, directly fighting gravity. Pretty amazing stuff.

yes ... you're right. I don't know where I got 4000 mph from. Thats only what, mach 5 ... 5.5? Something like that. I knew the shuttle is capable of way more than that, I think I've heard it could go mach 25 but I don't think it ever has gone quite that fast.

Shuttle launches are actually very slow to get to 60. Inertia's a bitch.

Would it still be measured on the "Mach scale" since sound can't travel very well in space?

I think it meant faster than the space shuttle when it touches down for a landing which is between 214 - 226 mph. (note the picture in the article of the shuttle landing)

Its still pretty much going at orbital velocity the instant it re-enters the atmosphere

(good save DG ... good save ... )
