Temps depends a bit on the track you run so you may not have experienced a "hot" track. I've seen 310 oil and 240's water in 95 degree heat before I laid off for a few laps. Other tracks the temps didn't get near that high because there were less long straights. I'm not even FI so you'll see more heat than others. A radiator upgrade was not enough to keep my oil temp low and the flexalite is the biggest on market that I know of. If I were you I'd get oil temp and IAT gauges in your line of sight. In the 230's the car is pulling timing so that may be helping reduce your temps somewhat too.

Not necessarily. Your coolant temps will come down much faster than the oil. Quality synthetics can handle temps in the 270+ range for a time, and I assume most who track don't run their oil for over 3000 miles of mixed driving. Cheap insurance.

I follow the European manual specs, which is Dexos2 (ACEA C3). I think the Gen6 track recommendation is for Dexos2 as well. There are some 5w-30s that meet it. The bonus is above 230f, where these oils stay in grade better.

I run redline 10w30 on track with a tstst and never see the oil over 255 on 100 degree track day with no issues. I just added a 25 row oil cooler to help cooling. I had a long talk with the engineers at redline and they said the oil getting at those temps wasn’t even close to being a issue.

Indeed.

For a Group V oil, it should be eating those temps for breakfast, otherwise what is the point really? It was the whole point of Group V, lol.

I see 300 F in michigan and average run around 270-280F at grattan, gingerman, waterford, never below no matter ambient. 300s usually when I am chassing somebody and not for too long as soon as I get some airflow (dont draft) it cools off in straight (i run a thermocouple through oil plug right into pan so all pan oil temps). I run amsoil 5w-50. 50 for track and the 5 for street since i do take it out on weekends sometimes and the 15W makes me nervous with filter when its a tad colder here late fall. I always warm car up a tad no matter if summer or fall.

GM recommends the 50 weightfor track so why not just go 50? And factory 5w..... so 5w-50 should be good. I cant tell you hard I beat on my camaro amd the analysis after almost 20,000 is still solid.

I use 0w-40 on the track in warm weather, which is what the guy who installed my cam suggests. Oil temps high 220s (according to the computer estimate). But I have a large oil cooler. I could probably go with a thinner oil.

I have good luck with higher water ratio in the coolant: about 65% water right now. I see about 220 deg. I think ACEA A3 rated xw-30 or xw-40 enough viscosity. With a 50 you have to be sure the oil is hot before you rev the motor or it will bypass. The higher viscosity also creates friction and runs hotter.

65% prolly more like 70% in favour of water in my setup, bottle of redline of waterwetter added too, for good measure.

Always using the thinnest viscosity oil that I can get away with, all in the name of lower temps, as you pointed out.

I have been using the above tried and tested formula for decades, IT Helps!

For many, the natural tendency to go too thick is truly understandable, but it really should not be this way.

For those on here that are truly going balls out, 25min plus_non-stop_WOT sessions, on a hot day, if you aren't putting your "race car" on a trailer to transport it, just remember to drain out your 50 weight oil, for 30, since it's a street driven car ; ).

Because GM is recommending a 50w oil for the LS7, not the LS3. Different motor, and I would venture to guess, different bearing clearances....
