Since it sounds like your block is fine, I would also vote for the 418 vs the 427. I think it would live a lot longer for you.

I would go the same route as sixty9 and drop in that forged rotating assembly into my block. I would think that you could have your stock parts cleaned up, honed out, and ready to go...and be in it for less than the 5k for that 427 short block. You do have the lack of any kind of warranty that way though, so that IS one appealing part of the shortblock you linked

Katech makes a nice motor, its a little more than everyone else but seems like a good choice, I would run one! You can drive to Katech an pick it up, save on shipping freight.

You can probably get 800-1000 for you lS3 short block that's damaged, someone will buy it and fix it.

Sag performance is who I bought my 428 from, I think for most the 418 is fine and more in line with building for FI, the difference in stroke from 418 to 418 is minute.... the deal is back when they first made stroked ls engines they threw any piston in with out the proper skirts etc etc and on a ls3 you can only over hone .020 max. So many had problem with piston rock and its about a piston actually rocking in the bore form the long stroke.

My pistons are racetec, my crank and rods molnar………… basically none better.....Forged; the pistons the former owner of JE pistons makes because he still wants to work, Molnar makes other names you know and trust....like Callies.. rebranded... Jerry at Custom engine supply ( SAG) talked at me for lengthy conversations and I am very happy with my results and his input to make sure everything is ready to go with the proper engine oil plugs etc and clearance done up good, I used a MAST windage tray and had to alter it also more... I got a complete shipped forged 428 for 5k and then properly had it assembled more and broke it in on the dyno like a engine should be with driven racing br30 for two rounds then vr30 for a few thousand miles. I picked my engine from those that make more than any other because...….. it saved $$$ and I had confidence in them, you would find others if they are good like TSP etc include br30 in the price and yes a new engine does need a twenty to thirty minute break in..... Just some thoughts. Remember to pick the pistons with the compression in mind, my N/A build is 11 to 1 and fine with a big cam with reliefs in it and the rings are good and should be picked for the purpose and the overhone of .005 of the new block...….so its down .005 of the .020 right off the bat and who knows what the bores are like in your cast in sleeves and if they can accept much of a overhone…. that's TBD and a new block yes does cut that out, Custom engine supply is in like Angola Indiana... they shipped to my tuner and yes I scoured the internet and the winter was when it was cheaper to buy...Good Luck.

Yes, I'll get retuned. I'm going to break it in and change the oil. Make sure everything is tight... then I'll take it in.
