Battery Charging Question

I don't' drive my car a lot and with the heat here in Arizona the battery takes a beating. I've purchased a DieHard Smart Charger to keep the battery charged and keep the battery in the car while I charge it. I've read that you should keep the hood open while the car is on a charger. I was going to place the charger itself on a box on the floor, and close the hood down but leave it open 3 or 4 inches, and then put the dust cover back on the car. Is there okay do you think? Don't want to burn down the house because i did this wrong. Not really a mechanical guy here so I appreciate your help.

im thinking that the hood doesnt matter since the battery is in the trunk.if explosive gasses are going to build up(you should have a length of rubber hose attached to the battery that vents them)the trunk would be the problem area.

I keep my hood up and charger/maintainer sits on plastic in front of radiator. Positive to positive hookup under hood and negative to screw on block.

I do believe redcoats is spot on. it has to due with battery gases that could escape and explode. You would be fine closing your hood.

Close your hood on the wires?

Looking at the other part of your thread I personally wouldn't put a cloth cover over the wires and car while it is charging. Just makes me uneasy, thinking about the wires burning out and the cover going up in flames. lol

My car sits covered up way too much. When I hook up my battery tender, I just roll the cover back and open the hood and leave it open while it's hooked up. I hang my tender from the hood latch. Just make sure your battery vent tube in the trunk is hooked up and not plugged and you should be fine.
