Side skirts over splash guards? Really?

I got my ZL1 side skirts today from a well known vendor for my 1LE. Will these really cut down on the stone chips on the rear fenders? Or will splash guards work better for that? I live in MI and this is a dd year round. I only have 10k on the car and the fenders behind the door are peppered already, as are my rear wheels.

I'm not really liking the fit of the skirts, there's at least a 1/2" gap at the rear of the door area. I havne't installed them, was just "test" fitting and seeing how they're going to look before I have them wrapped. Is this something that I can use a heat gun to fix, or do I just have to live with that?

Those sticky tires are gravel grabbers. My car has both the guards and the side skirts... I have only 1400 miles. Stone chips out the wazoo too. Anything you can do will help.

Most ZL1-style side skirts have really poor fitment due to the curvature of the mounting area. I wonder how the carbon fiber ones fit, since those have almost zero give.

Just a bit concerned putting skirting on the car for winter driving here in MI. I will be driving it year round. I worried that the rivets will eventually rot and fall off. That wouldn't be good!! LOL

Here you go. Stainless steel rivets would prevent that.

There was a vendor on ebay that was selling GM ZL1 take off side skirts for about 500 bucks. The ZL1 rockers can fit on a SS with minimal modifications. Your reason is exactly why i never bought any aftermarket skirts for my SS 1LE when I had it.

As for the rock debris, you can do both side skirts and rock guards.

Paint Protection Film is probably the best option. I would do the whole rocker panel and rear quarter panel just to avoid seams in the middle of the panel. It's too late for my car, but that's what I would have done.

I did the Xcel rocker PPF kit, ACS side skirts, and ZL1 addons rock guards. All prior to throwing on 1LE size tires on so crossing my fingers that keeps things looking good.

I hear you all on the side skirt fitment issues, but not sure I totally agree with the gap issues (assuming you mean gap at meeting the car's rocker panel and not a gap where meets the front rock guard), at least with the "final" fitment. I just installed EOS skirts so let me explain:

Yes, the upper part of the skirt that needs to contact the rocker does indeed have a gap most of the the way along the length of the rocker when holding up to the car, but the skirts are flexible enough that if you clamp the bottom surface to the underside of the car, you can gently bend the upper part of the skirt to meet the car rocker and completely close the gap; screws with washers then hold it in place nicely (I can't speak to rivets as I didn't do that). You can then attach the bottom skirt surface to the car without issue. No gaps.

I will say though that I did experience more trouble installing the passenger side skirt, as others have noted in previous threads. It seems that unlike the driver's side, which fits pretty well straight away, the passenger one isn't shaped properly and wants to pull away near the front wheel and back wheel. More bending coaxing was required to get it into place. But "final" fit you can't tell, other than it's also slightly shorter in length than passenger side by 1/8".

I'm sure the ACS skirts would have fit better from the get go, but I couldn't pass up the EOS ones because they were 1/3 the cost of the ACS (unpainted versions in both cases).

I got the skirts primarily to try to prevent rock chips, but now that they are painted and installed, I think it makes the 1LE look more complete (black ground effects all the way around). Chevy should have provided skirts with the 1LE package.

If I do put them on, I'm going to use U-clips and screws to hold them in place rather then rivets.

I have skirts and guards and they both improved the protection level dramatically. I have ZL1 and they fit perfectly, so no comments on that. Mine came with black anodised aluminum rivets so again, no issues there.

When I had my SS1LE I used the ACS ZL1 side skirts and rock chip guards (fronts). In combination, they worked very well at keeping the rock chips down. And, the fit and finish ( I opted for the 1LE black version) was perfect with zero gaps. I didn’t regret this purchase at all, even though it was costly. I also had the rear section factory PPF removed and a larger area of PPF re-applied to protect the rears. I didn’t drive the car year round though.. just summers only. Not sure how the snow would affect the use of the ACS side skirts because the bottoms are hollow ground, for lack of a better term. The factory ZL1 side skirts fully wrap underneath the car. This would keep snow from sticking under the skirts and clumping up I would assume. Again, I don’t drive my cars in winter times so I am just guessing here.

I also have ACS skirts + rock guards.

It helps but you still need PPF, I'd go with heavy duty PPF or a double layer in front of the rear wheels. I did PPF + a section of matte PPF in that area, the matte PPF hides the inevitable rock damage pretty well although for the amount of rock that area sees a spray-on bedliner might be the best bet, lol.
