Curious as to why am Oil cooler would be needed? I take it there's no way of flushing it if there's debris?

Yes, it's always best to replace an oil cooler after an engine failure or you can't be certain what is stuck in there.

You can flush it, but results are uncertain.

They owe all "non-failed pump" affected owners a preventative pump replacement, and all owners who had a failure a 1) new motor or at least 2) full top-to-bottom engine inspection, oil system flush, new oil cooler, lines, etc. and bearings replacement including cam bearings and, new crank or cam if needed.

Probably stuff I'm missing, I'm not an expert that's my .02
It goes through the filter first.
I attached the oil flow diagram.

Thanks that's good piece of mind to have.

The service manager at my dealership is a friend of mine so I trusted his explanation.

That makes sense, I assumed I was missing something important.

Doesn't the pressure bypass valve allow oil flow to bypass the filter when the car is very cold at startup in the morning? In this case if the pump is already crumbling inside metal particles from a failed pump could get past the filter.

For what it's worth, I would ask the service manager to show you the filter and have them cut it open or let you take it somewhere to do that. It may be too late, wouldn't surprise me if the dealer already disposed of it or withheld for GM.

It's not just the oil pump itself. Running the engine on load with low oil pressure will almost inevitably cause some damage, I would want a compression/leakdown check. Furthermore I would never consider buying a used car with a reported oil pump failure. Kind of like buying a car with an accident on carfax

Ordered a new pump from Katech so it doesn’t fail while on the track.

There's no need to get a Katech pump, that's just throwing away money and probably voiding your powertrain warranty. GM worked with Melling to revise the pump design and the issue has been resolved.

I agree, if you still have a warranty don't install the Katech or GM won't cover damage if that fails. Use the revised pump, I bet it's great now.

You can sell the Katech to someone who is doing significant mods.

Melling doesn't make these pumps.

As far as I can tell the "new design" isn't any stronger. I'm going to make a video at some point in the next week or 2 showing why these pumps fail.
