Borla ATAK Cat-back on ZL1 Vert

Alright so I'm a bit confused. I did some searching and found the following regarding the atak cat back zl1 setup:

Borlas website: not recommended for use with Vert

Phastek: does not fit vert

Camaro6 thread: claims install was successful.

Just curious if anyone can clear this up as I don't want to drop 3 grand to be disappointed.

Maybe I should just go to dealership directly ? I have spoken briefly and the fitment issue was never brought up ( this could be due to lack of knowledge by service staff though)

Based on information I have found it seems to conflict. Any confirmation either way would be helpful. Thanks in advance!

I believe the issue is that most of the cat-back exhausts on the market have a potential clearance issue between the convertible cross-bracing and their exhaust so they don't officially support it to avoid customer problems and compliants. The OEM exhaust has small crush zones to clear the bracing. Some forum members have installed cat-back exhausts without problems. Although the crush zones look like a restriction there have been several posts with dyno results to show that it isn't for OEM power levels. Borla also sells an axle-back version of the ATAK which is listed as compatible with convertibles and less expensive than the cat-back.

Any reason why you cannot do Axle-backs and avoid the entire issue?

I believe most axel backs have the same issue clearing the bracing.

When I had my ‘13 ZL1 vert, the only company that sold a kit that allowed their exhaust to fit on a convertible was Stainless Works.

Borla claims their axle-back is compatible with a convertible. The picture makes it look like they just replace the suitcase muffler.

The axle back the pipe diameter is also smaller then the full cat back 3" vs 2.75". Might also have something to do with it.

I have an AWE axle back. No issues. I suspect it’s the same for any axle back since everything you are replacing is after the cross braces. You won’t find a cat back for a vert where the vendor says it will fit. It might. But they don’t say. If you really want a cat back (from any vendor) find a decent local exhaust shop and talk to them. You may need some custom work done to make it fit.
