For my GM vehicles, i uses the VXDiag Nano with MDI and GDS2 Software, for others i use the Launch X431. I also use the FSM's and Alldata depending on the vehicle, its one thing to have a great scan tool but you also need the information to use it with.

If you just want a scan tool to read CEL codes, you can get an ODB port blue tooth transceiver on Amazon for $15-20 and a program like Torque on your phone.

I use a Cen-Tech tool from Harbor Freight. Previously had a more expensive one back in the early-mid 00s (orange colored, I think it was Actron) that stopped working after a few years. I contacted the manufacturer and they were less than helpful, so I opted for a cheap Harbor Freight replacement(s) moving forward.

+1, my Cen-Tech has done everything I've needed very reliably. It will not provide all the abilities of the HP tuner equipment but can read and clear codes. Along with providing some other helpful info. Good value IMHO.
