Fuse 51 and AFM

So I pulled the F51 trick on my A8 the other day and have to say that the car sounded like crap in 4 cylinder mode. I assume that this is because of the AFM valves further up in the exhaust system.

Are folks disabling AFM in the tune when doing the F51 pull? If so, is there any point in getting a new exhaust, even an axleback, until after the powertrain warranty expires? All of the videos for aftermarket exhaust systems are either on M6s or at WOT on the A8s. There are no vids that I've seen sampling these systems in 4 cylinder cruise mode, probably because they sound like garbage.

Right now I'm thinking that I wait until it expires and then get the full catback and tune out the AFM. If anyone has any experience with modified tunes and warranty issues, let me know.

Full disclosure: I'm one of those people who value the warranty and don't want to give the dealership any excuses.

Thanks all!

You could buy a Range AFM device. It plugs into the OBD port and keeps the engine in V8 mode without making any permanent changes to the ECU. Unplug it and the engine returns to normal AFM V4/V8 operation.

Had my Range (Firmware 8.6) in for over a year now and over 11,000 miles.

Works perfectly. No problems, no CELS, etc.

I even left in plugged in (by accident) while on vacation for almost 3 weeks. Car sat the whole time. Started up just fine. That was about 3 months ago. Still no issues.

I pull it when I take the car in for service. Put it back when I pick it up.

Really makes a huge difference.

Absolutely, if you like the exhaust sound with the dampers open all the time in V8 mode, get the Range, in V4 mode it sucks. I did for almost a year before I went full bolt on exhaust and tune. I do almost all non-highway driving and only lost about 1 MPG. V4 mode is more valuable to guys that do a lot of highway driving.

I have pulled my 51 and use AFM Range as well. No problems at all. No farting when going from V4 to V8 anymore.

Another thumbs up for Range AFM delete. Sounds tons better, you'll even get some more crackling when you let off.
Only bummer (and it's a small one), is that you'll see more soot in your outer tail pipes, unless you have a lead foot always.
