What a great thread! Ive enjoyed it thoroughly and will be reading it start to finish at least another time or two. The opinions on mods and comparisons are interesting. I currently have a 18' 2SS 1LE factory stock. I daily it 9 mo/yr. Bought used with 5k miles last July. I was literally OMW to test drive and prob buy a 18' ZLE when Chevrolet dealer I had on lookout called to tell me they just got a 2SS 1LE traded in when an older gentleman couldn't climb out of it anymore. So I detoured, drove the SS 1LE and couldn't stop laughing. When dealer called I was stressing about just how harsh the ride would feel to me of the ZLE and knew I was probably making a mistake buying it to daily (but doing it anyways. For me the SS 1LE was the right choice. Haven't made it to track day yet. Live couple hours from VIR and planning to get my first taste in March. Anyways..thanks everyone for your input into this thread

Thank you for these details.

Question regarding ZL1 1LE style rear wing. Does it hurt rear view mirror visibility? I have no issues with small spoiler of 1SS 1LE, but I'm affraid that with large wing visibility will be poor.

Well YES it definitely affects the visibility but that's NOT an issue with me because I use the rearview camera instead of the rear view native mirror.

UPDATE My and My Car's WHEREABOUTS

Well guys and gals,

It has been literally MONTHS since I have posted. If you look at post 336 above you will see where I documented I had cracked a piston in my engine and at the time HOPEFULLY the replacement pistons would be readily available.

Well the bottom line is high compression 4.080 pistons WERE NOT available and we had to special order them and then wait on the MFG to do basically a one off production run.

So my damaged short block assembly was sent to LME and the performed the services as outlined in the attached redacted SALES ORDER in the link BELOW.

As you can see from the attached SALES ORDER, there is ALOT that goes into producing a blueprinted high performance engine. LME is in my opinion the VERY BEST at doing these builds so the expense and wait is worth it based on my experience and countless others.

Anyhow after the shortblock was done, it was sent back to AMP and they reinstalled it and I brought it home TODAY.

After I break it in for roughly 500 miles, we will change the oil and then I will take it back to the track for more road racing follies. LOL

Its right in the middle of your sight line out the rear window. i like it and no doubt its right for aero but those are the facts.

blueprinting??????

I mentioned that AMP just installed the engine that LME (Late Model Engines) built for me. The build sheet for that engine is attached. Notice in the specs that the tolerances LME uses in their build and assembly process is down to the 10 thousandts of an inch.

This precision does NOT come cheap but the results are certainly worth it at least in my opinion. The common term used for this process is called blueprinting which I am sure most of you knew already but there you have it!!!

Well the only parts that we really replaced were the pistons because we had to go with a 4.080 piston because the prior set of pistons were 4.065. We reused all the ARP hardware and then of course we installed all new bearings.

The machining, blueprinting, re-assembly and then the reinstall of the engine back in the car were about 7K all in.

If you had started all of this from scratch, you could expect to spend between 15-18K on just the engine.

PPF install in time for THIS year's track days

Ok guys. Well after repainting my bumper TWICE due to stone bruising and track day chip damage , I decided to take some measures for this year's track days.

I chose to use XPEL Ultimate PLUS on my front bumper bar area, splitter area and that area that is right in front of the rear wheels. PICS are below. This PPF comes in COLORS as well as clear.

I used GLOSS BLACK PPF because that will hide any pre-existing surface damage. It is roughly 8MIL thick and is SELF HEALING. They DO offer a 10 MIL thick PPF but because of the thickness it does NOT bead around curves as easily. It has a 10 year warranty.

The GLOSS black matches pretty well. KUDOS to the installer Scotts Solar Auto Spa down here in my neck of the woods. The only issues he had was he had to flatten out some of the touch up paint that I had used to fill in some of the track chips prior to installing the PPF.

This stuff holds up very well as I had previously tested it on my Zl1 style splitter LAST year and after going off the track VERY hard there was no apparent damage to the splitter.

The stuff is NOT inexpensive but this install cost me 750 dollars for material and labor. To me its well worth it.

UPDATE on new engine replacement (power numbers)

If you look back up in this thread you will see where I had an issue with my 416 and I cracked ONE of the pistons. THAT engine had somewhere between 13.5 to 14.0-1 compres sion. Rear wheel HP with this engine was around 582.

When LME rebuilt the short block THIS TIME they used a 4.080 piston resulting in a 418 CI displacement. They ALSO used a slightly LOWER dome on the piston. This resulted in about a 12-12.5 to 1 compression. This resulted in slightly less RWHP which was confirmed by a DYNO yesterday (570 RWHP) with torque around 525 (about 10 less).

WHY you may ask???

Well I also run E85 but on rare occassions I did have to run 93. So the thought was a little bit LOWER compression and a little less timing (about -1.5 degrees) would be prudent given this car is also a daily driver.

I also had toyed with the idea of a larger cam which would have resulted in RWHP being being beyond the 600 mark BUT driveability would have suffered especially since I am a running stock converter A10.

First race of this year will be at EAGLES CANYON RACEWAY on April 6th with the NASA boys. Will feedback some track times after that. My fastest time to date was around a 2.02 CCW.

Thanks!! Yeah I agree I usually do all of those . APEX does a GREAT job with those events. They have the TT event at MSR Cresson coming up but I HATE the 3.1 configuration (the 1.3 portion ruins that for me) so I am doing the NASA TT at Eagles Canyon on April 6th.

I probably will do all of the rest of the APEX TT events the remainder of the year.

Oh that is interesting that you hate the 3.1. It's my favorite lap in Texas. I love the wild ride of the 1.3 section. I was planning on doing NASA ECR put my new coilover setup won't be done in time. I'm doing testing with Adam on April 6 on the 1.7.
