Another load of Camaros heading out to excited new owners...

"CN2127, how does this radio sound?" I inquired as I stepped onto the nose platform of our locomotive, a beautiful blue sky and perfect temperatures greeting me here in Battle Creek. "Loud and clear on the CN2127," the engineer answers back as I step off the last step of the locomotive ladder onto the ground, the train still rolling. I keyed my mic again, "CN2127, copy on the loud and clear, ok to keep them rolling in the forward direction, five-thousand and seventy-eight feet and six inches, or sixty-six cars, whichever you prefer, to a cut." The engineer responded, laughing, "Copy that, 2127 out." (Whether you have a good day or a bad day, in any industry, is determined mostly by attitude; at least that's how I look at it)

I pulled my train list from my pocket and began pacing back and forth, looking for car numbers, and giving the engineer feedback, "40 to go, 25 to go," and so on.

...then I saw them. 24 cars back, 1,344 feet deep, twenty cars loaded with Camaros. They were in two separate blocks of ten cars each, both heading to different locations.

I would've taken some pictures if having my cell-phone on at work didn't merit a $17,000 fine.

I won't lie... I was pretty pumped and this is why I love my job. Now, after a two mile run, some weight-lifting, and countless (seventeen hours and fifteen minutes, to be exact) boring hours spent in a hotel missing my wife, daughter and puppy, I'm finally getting out and heading into Canada, and then back home.

I hope you all have an outstanding day, and be sure to give that Camaro wave to the men on the big iron!

Any idea what all the poles are for around the rail cars in the last picture of SSMYILE's post?

Those poles all have lights on them to illuminate the rail cars, and help the drivers load them via whatever little bits of light make it through the perforations in the sides of the cars. We have them here in Flint at the truck plant, too...

...we also use the poles to determine how far away we are from the end of the track when spotting them. In Flint they have the posts about every 50', and an auto-rack is about 100' long (93', actually)

I still like to say rediculous fractions of cars during long shove moves. "Okay NH Fiddy Five Seven Tee Seven you're clear back for 36 and 46/47ths, over". Pretty cool that you had that many loads full of new Camaros.
